They call themselves "New York's College Team" and that runs in ads and television stations in EVERY market of New York State. NYC, Albany, Utica, Binghamton, Rochester, Buffalo, Elmira/Corning, and the Hudson Valley. They are trying to out market SUNY and keep the University Centers from thinking they can build a presence within big time athletics. It was a direct response a few years ago to SUNY Buffalo's push to become THE university of New York instead of UB or SUNY Buffalo. While they didn't end up changing their name, they do try and highlight the "NEW YORK" of SUNY on a lot of their jerseys now. Though I don't think the other 3 SUNY University Centers or 63 other SUNY campuses in general would ever let them run with the New York name alone.

All of that said, I think UCONN showed that had the American held onto the name and Tourney, it would have filled a couple sessions at the Garden. The AAC has a chance to really plant its flag at the Garden this week. UCONN in the East Regional Final and SMU in the NIT Final Four. May be the American can host/schedule some sort of Kick-off Tourney for the Garden each fall for more Garden exposure.

UConn and Syracuse really dominate NYC for basketball. It's practically equal. Syracuse has more of the middle class while UConn has more of the boroughs. Go into the boroughs where they play basketball, and ask them who they like. It's North Carolina and UConn. This is why UConn grabs NYC's best basketball players while Syracuse is Philly and Baltimore/DC based.

Sure. St. John's isn't even a blip on the radar.

The fact that Syracuse is using a marketing plan to highlight that act shouldn't be criticized - UConn really needs to be doing the same to position themselves for the future.

Agree with your point, except the SJU part.

Have a question for everyone: If SJU beat Georgetown on a FS-1 televised game, and no one saw it - did it really happen?

Also do not agree about the Rutgers part. We have all seen what happens to the support when their football season falls apart.

The gist of Frank's post is correct. UConn needs to utilize MSG during the season as well.

No one in Connecticut is interested in that. They want their home games played in Connecticut. When Notre Dame offered to play UConn in The Meadowlands, the Connecticut legislature intervened with a resounding "No!" despite the obvious advantages to having Notre Dame on the schedule.

By what measure has the move by White "cost millions"... If anything White has done it on the cheap, which would be my complaint.

Their were no new uniforms, no big ad campaigns.... White did the following last season

1 - Changed our Buffalo radio station from WECK to the Fan
2 - Paid for some air time on the fan in NYC
3 - got some UB games on Bloomberg radio in NYC
4 - got a weekly coaches show and a deal for 6-10 UB hoops/football games on WGRZ (over the air games on the most watched TV station in Buffalo)

I've seen most of these contracts and trust me when I say UB is not "spending millions" on the rebrand. Things like the floor at alumni had to be done as maintance in any event.

What they are doing is reaping money from a surge in donations and ticket sales over previous seasons.

UB's attendance is still quite modest but in terms of sales this seasons 6 homes games all ranked within the previous top ten for UB's time in FBS. While that was going on donations large and small have increased.

Please tell me where the "millions have been spent" on this? White started the NYBI last spring and UB's annual athletic budget is typically about 28 million. So youre telling me that 4% of UB's total budget this past year was spent on the NYBI?

I'm talking about the university brand, the change from SUNY-Buffalo to U. Buffalo. That was done a decade ago at great expense.

You don't just up and decide to rebrand your own university as an AD.

Sorry you mentioning White and the U Buffalo decision a decade ago confused me...

It seems to me the CEO of the Athletic Department should be able to push a new brand. He did not rename the school or the team. He simply decided that the largetst state school in NY might want to reach out to its alumni all over the state.

The University has not been rebranded, at all... The Diploma's today say the same thing that my 15 year old diploma says. The *SPORTS TEAMS* have been rebranded.

1. this thread reeks of an inferiority complex. your team made the FF and your first thought is to troll cuse?

2. i find it hilarious that people troll cuse for the New York ad campaign. What were you guys expecting? new york is a state just as much as it is a city and some of you guys are arguing that they shouldn't brand them selves as the states go to team because it would imply they are the city's college team as well. and whats especially hilarious is you guys think they shouldn't be doing this at a time when the sunys are rising???

As someone who grew up a 'Cuse fan... I know plenty of Orange fans that carry their advertising banner / campaign as if it is gospel and that they actually own the tri-state. Plenty of posters mention it, and some use it in their signature file. The school fired the first shot with the ongoing campaign, their fans revel in it, you've got to expect response when someone else they dismiss out NY's them. LOL I think it's all in good fun!

I'm pretty tied in with UB athletics and the community / fan base...

There was a very loud minority of fans upset by the NYBI but they were more than offset by supporters last year. The seasons attendance and donation marks have thinned out the number of people complaining even more.

After 12 months of NYBI white is more popular than he was before it, despite the random prostesations of the B-Lo news and some anonymous spectrum editors.

SO let me ask you... If "the blow back from the billionairs and community" was immense how did it materialize?
