So now what?
I posted this in the assistant coach thread, but it appear derailed. I love Pastner but surely it is time to evaluate what went wrong. No significant postseason run yet. Why? I think it has to do with staff turnover.
This is to me the most important and obvious deficiency about CJP and this program under him
We have lacked consistency and direction from the bench with the revolving door of assistants every year
CJP needs to bring in some great basketball teachers that will stick around, anticipate and teach game situations so we develop our players properly and allow them to dictate the flow and pace of games. Coach does so many things well but I think has under estimated the importance of his staff. He cannot do it all and the players aren't benefiting from the revolving door year after year. No an older coach probably cant quite keep pace with Josh, but he can teach continual concepts that we would see executed fluidly on the floor, both offensively and defensively.
What you saw out there this year was a Frankenstein type game. We had a lot of very strong parts put together which at times, though capable looked very ugly. I guess another way to put it is too many chefs spoil the stew, and we had new chefs on staff every year. Josh needs to find at least one, better if he could keep two salty coaches on staff as assistants, who can flat out teach and coach, who are not looking to trade him a player for a position on staff, and will stick around.
I've mentioned this in umpteen threads, but this staff needs to be replaced. Who he hires will be of utmost importance. I'm sure Josh recognizes all these things now, at least I hope so. He isn't like X and doesn't have runners, at least I don't think he does or he wouldn't need to play ring around the coach every year. Josh can sell this program, and can teach these young men a lot, but he cannot teach these players the things you learn from experience. This is where it hurts some that he has yet to make that deep run in the tourney.
Oh, I can't stand X either but give the devil his due. We all know he is, well, not exactly honest...but the deep runs in the NCAAs help him and teams like Izzos sell themselves after awhile. Symbiotic relationship kinda thing..
Kudos to Joe Jackson and Chris Crawford for their careers here.

Just to clarify, is this to develop player skills or aid recruiting? Because we have already tried that once, see Luke Walton, and that did not work, but it did work with Stoudamire. So it's not cut and dried, has to be the right guy.
Personally, if that's what you want, I would have somebody like Mike Bibby on my list. Not necessarily him, but like him.
However, my first two calls would be Penny and AA.

How many lottery picks are on Florida? Or Dayton? Or Wisconsin? Or Michigan? Did Louisville have any last year?

Isn't it also true that a reputation for being a springboard to D1 head coaching gigs helps you attract the best assistants, who in turn help you attract the best recruits?
So one year here is what got him the IUPUI job? Or was it the fact that he was from that area?

We desperately need continuity and assistants that feel a commitment to the University and to the city of Memphis.....That's why I feel good about Josh being here,he is definitely committed. Penny and or AA can and would connect with the players in an incredible, unique manner that would exude confidence and consistency that we so desperately lack.....But the real question is? Is Josh willing to overcome his own idiosyncrasies to allow these key personnel to have an impact on this University....I think his is a bit of a control freak and can't seem to find it within himself to allow the key personnel to be apart of and make an impact on this University out of fear that it would seem as though the success is not of his own fruition, although it really would be. But an obsessive-compulsive,control-freak does not see that(Until it's either too l8,or they learn through experience). And that's the main ingredient with Josh that we have to either be patient with or not....And that ingredient is EXPERIENCE

Remember, he's a very young coach who's very good, especially for his experience level. I think he needs to recruit a team instead of assembling the best players available. This means getting great role players...a beast in the middle that may not be sound offensively. A perimeter defensive stopper (Geron). A distributer and pure point...something. We have too many of the same types of players. Shaq and AN resemble each other's games...Dixon and JJ are very similar. CC was a good 3pt threat. We need a Skal type talent with another elite player surrounded with top specialists. Oh, and quit overextending the D

I am confident that the small minority of fans that think they know what is best for our program would run it into the ground

I don't want to diminish the effect or role good asst. coaches have on a program. They play an important part in their assigned specialties.
I have read several post in the last few days stating we need a good asst. coach to teach defense, fundamentals, mental toughness, discipline.
Why don't we just find the best asst. coach in college basketball. Who knows how to coach Defense, fundamentals, and every aspect of basketball, offer him 2.65 million dollars to be our head coach.

To be honest there are not that many out there. Remember this is the 3rd assistant we are talking about. The head coach just needs to get a better philosophy.

I agree totally, and am not meaning to suggest we look that route. I just don.t want the success of our program to be based on how good our asst. coaches are.

We just need players to understand and adopt to their roles.... I have heard recently, and it made a lot of sense...".That players understanding what they can't do, focus more and become more efficient/effective at what they can do"

Consistently being a 7, 8, 9 seed will make a deep run tough. We must play our way up to better seeds.
