The ACC had a worse year, but the Big East's bad year was more important to the conference.

Not sure why Big East Homer switched from Scott Hall to Jeff Jarrett--did Scott Hall get a Big Ten invite?

Scott Hall was the obe.

Jeff Jarrett represents the nbe, right when they started to let in any jabroni off the street.

Big XII by far had the worst tournament the way everybody was clamoring.

The A-10/ACC dynamic caused by Coach K's comments was about all the A-10 won this year outside of a great run by Dayton.

Once they lost/parted ways with the best of the old Big East - Louisville, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Notre Dame... they became basically the same level as the A-10.

It's nearly impossible to find any one metric that tells definitively which conferences are the best. Every rating service has its own formula, and even if they didn't, who can answer what makes a "best" conference? Is it the conference with the strongest top teams, the strongest bottom teams, or the strength of the "average" team (whatever that is).

My personal preference is to only consider the stronger teams. So, for each conference, I looked at the strength ratings of the top 50% of each conference - the ones that have some chance of being considered for post season play. I combined the rankings of the RPI, Pomeroy rankings, and Sagarin ratings.

This year, using that metric, the B1G and the Big 12 were in a virtual tie for first. Tied for 3rd were the ACC and the AAC, followed by the PAC 12, SEC, Big East and A10. Where it gets interesting is how the conferences would have been ranked if the final realignment moves (Louisville, Maryland, etc) had been made this year instead of next.

Had that happened, the ACC would have moved into a three way tie for first, while the AAC would have fallen all the way to 8th, in a virtual three way tie with the Mountain West and West Coast Conference, significantly behind the A10 and Big East. Louisville makes that much of a difference.

As for which conference was the most disappointing, for that you have to consider what your own expectations were. I can't put numbers to that, so I'll have to let the fans duke it out.

ESPN wrote the conference obit in 30 for 30.

I don't have disdain for the BE. I agree with the 30 for 30, that the "Big East" DIED with the exit of Syracuse and UCONN.

The teams that bought the logo for 100 mill are playing dress up.

Duke laid a giant egg. Syracuse laid a small egg. NC State collapsed at the end of their game with St. Louis and UNC collapsed at the end of their game with ISU. Only UVa and Pitt lost hard fought games to an equal or better team. In that sense, I think the ACC's general collapse at the end of the season was most disappointing.

I think the ACC needs to change the style of it's "touch/gotcha" refereeing that causes ACC teams to be looking for foul calls instead of just pushing through the play. It does not serve the ACC in the post season. On the other hand, when most of your stars are Freshman and Sophomores, who knows what will happen.

NCAA needs to drop the rules change They put in this Year for fouls. They haven't enforced it with Kentucky so why penalize other schools down the stretch. ACC got burned in several games. Old Big East physical style of play worked for most fans. Bring it back.

they aren't changing. If anything, may even get enforced tighter.

Maybe you don't remember what college basketball was like before the Big East thugs led by Georgetown. It was a much better game. The game got really, really ugly for many years until athletic ability starting overcoming the muggings. I still remember when Dayton gave Georgetown fits in a game in the 80s and Georgetown basically got away with assault. They would have been thrown in jail if they did that on the street!

I think the hand-checking rule is the best change they have made since the shot clock. But they have gone a little overboard in this tourney. Sounds like sour grapes on your UK comment. UL got a gift with seconds left when their player stepped in front of a UK player, flopped after colliding with his shoulder, and got a charging call. And UK has gotten some of the ticky-tack foul calls as well.

I suggest you look at Orangefan's post on NCAA tourney shares per school:
1. Big 10 1.33/school
2. Big 12 1.30/school

On their way back to Ames? UConn caught a break the Heels blew that lead. UConn cannot beat UNC in men's hoops. I think it's written in stone somewhere...

Iowa State's best player, George Niang, broke his foot in their first NCAA game and missed the UNC and UConn games. ISU had a great year.

RE: More disappointing bball conference this season...Big East or ACC?
I think realistically if you looked at the polls preseason, Big East only had 1 team in the top 25, Marquette. Not much expected there.

ACC though had Duke, Syracuse, UNC(all top 11), and Virginia in the top 25.

Really if you look thru end of regular season- both ACC and Big East at least maintained what they were expected to do preseason. Nova and Creighton in the Big East, and ACC with 4 top 25 teams.

Both had bad tournaments.

I guess you could say ACC only because they had more top teams/chances to make some serious noise, and they didn't.

Big East's job now though is to make it where preseason, the expectations are so much higher.

ISU had a great year. They have an awesome young coach that I remember playing there: "the Mayor".

If you recall, the pundits were hyping the Big XII up as a conference right before the tourney, unfortunately, they did not deliver.

They got most of those credits just for getting invited, not for performing well. Through the Elite 8, the Big 12 ranked only 7th in winning % in the tournament.

28 of the 32 conferences got at least half of their credits for getting invited, everyone but the AAC, SEC, Pac 12 and Big 10.
