MyBB Coaching changes at Memphis [Assistants]?
There seems to have been quiet a lot of assistant coach turnovers during Pastner's tenure here. Is this typical of other programs, or an exception?

Josh had said several times he likes for his assistants to become or try and become head coaches.

Babbling much? Which coaches acknowledge on TV immediately after the game the great work of the assistants?

Why deal with truth when he can make up his own faux reality. It's more convenient to his agenda.

We do have a lot of turnover. Quite puzzling when people stick with K, Cal, Self, etc.

I would like to see some consistency on staff, and for Pastner to hire someone with a great defensive philosophy.

Gardner is not leaving because "he is not valued or listened to". Dude was brought in as a "recruiter" and for his relationship with J Lyle. He couldnt close the deal... He essentially brought nothing. Turns out it was a bad hire IMO... NOW HIRE A SEASONED BENCH COACH WITH EMPHASIS ON DEFENSE!!!! Btw, just because he left for another job, doesnt mean they wanted him to stay... He was gone one way or the other.

RE: Coaching changes at Memphis [Assistants]?
It's not like guys are leaving for the heck of it. Most have landed better jobs. That's actually looked at as a good thing. Josh has started a decent coaching tree only 5 years in to his career.

Willis Wilson - HC @ TAMU-CC
Glen Cyprien - Asst. HC @ TAMU w/ his best friend
Jack Murphy - HC @ NAU
Luke Walton - Return to NBA after lockout (always expected)
Damon Stoudemire - Lateral move to alma mater
Jason Gardner - HC @ IUPUI

Turnover is a normal thing for all staffs, football, basketball, etc. When you have good people, other schools come calling. I have no doubt Josh will make another good hire. Always has (minus the Luke Walton thing)

i wouldn't call that a lateral move. sean miller > josh pastner.

It was a lateral move for Damon. He admitted to struggling with the prospect of leaving and said that it was one of the most difficult decisions he had to make.

Struggling to find the dark side of a guy getting a head coaching job, at home, doubling or tripling his salary, a chance to be his own boss. Most people would like to get turned over that fashion.
I wonder if he needs a clown in Indy, TBabbler has the qualifications.

RE: Coaching changes at Memphis [Assistants]?
This is to me the most important and obvious deficiency about CJP and this program under him

We have lacked consistency and direction from the bench with the revolving door of assistants every year

CJP needs to bring in some great basketball teachers that will stick around, anticipate and teach game situations so we develop our players properly and allow them to dictate the flow and pace of games. Coach does so many things well but I think has under estimated the importance of his staff. He cannot do it all and the players aren't benefiting from the revolving door year after year. No an older coach probably cant quite keep pace with Josh, but he can teach continual concepts that we would see executed fluidly on the floor, both offensively and defensively.

What you saw out there this year was a Frankenstein type game. We had a lot of very strong parts put together which at times, though capable looked very ugly. I guess another way to put it is too many chefs spoil the stew, and we had new chefs on staff every year. Josh needs to find at least one, better if he could keep two salty coaches on staff as assistants, who can flat out teach and coach, who are not looking to trade him a player for a position on staff, and will stick around.

I've mentioned this in umpteen threads, but this staff needs to be replaced. Who he hires will be of utmost importance. I'm sure Josh recognizes all these things now, at least I hope so. He isn't like X and doesn't have runners, at least I don't think he does or he wouldn't need to play ring around the coach every year. Josh can sell this program, and can teach these young men a lot, but he cannot teach these players the things you learn from experience. This is where it hurts some that he has yet to make that deep run in the tourney.

Oh, I can't stand X either but give the devil his due. We all know he is, well, not exactly honest...but the deep runs in the NCAAs help him and teams like Izzos sell themselves after awhile. Symbiotic relationship kinda thing..

Kudos to Joe Jackson and Chris Crawford for their careers here.

Agree 100%. The lack of continuity on the bench has had a definite impact especially for a young coach in training.

Josh's biggest sign of maturation would be to truly recognize his weaknesses and address those. Press conference coach speak means nothing without action.
