I always liked playing at Bama when I was in school. The wimmins were hot, and the sympathy sex was awesome.

I don't understand the problem. This is exactly the sort of OoC game we should be scheduling, isn't it? I'm mean, I'm not knocking any school that would prefer not to walk into that minefield, but OoC games should be one of two varieties; automatic wins, and statement games against nationally prominent teams.

What wouldn't make any sense as on OoC game, for example, would be any of our former brethren.

A lot of current FBS programs have been torn a new a-hole by the Crimson Tide so no big deal.

Stopping Alabama on a possession would have been worth the trip to Tuscaloosa. Getting a first down on Alabama would have been worth it. Just seeing ODU on the same field with the legendary Crimson Tide would have been worth it even if we did get our asses handed to us.

Nobody cancels a home FCS game for a certain loss. The one FCS game is on everyones schedule because it counts towards Bowl Eligibility which ODU will be eligible for the first time in program history.

Not even under consideration.

Too bad for ODU fans. A win against an FCS technically counts but a good showing against a Top 5 opponent would have impressed bowl scouts. No one on those bowl committees give a **** about a win against an inferior FCS opponent. They would be more impressed to see a program step up to the plate and challenge the best. I would hope ODU wouldn't need that FCS win to make them bowl eligible.

I see this as just another "5 minutes off the clock" embarrassment to the program. A surrender. Cowering in fear.

ODU could have worked something out.

Are you serious?

Wake Forest, Duke UNC, UVA, VT, Md, ECU, Rutgers, Syracuse, Connecticut, Boston College, etc. are the types of schools Old Dominion should be playing. Go5 teams that play Bama are looking for a payoff. Period.

A first year FBS team has no business playing Bama. What if Taylor got hurt cause the freshman OL couldn't stop the Bama pressure. We lost 8 players like the UNC game, and we ended up playing freshmen walk-ons at the end. I totally trust the AD and coach to do the right thing.

I tell you what. Lets revisit this thread after the USM/uat game this year and see how many USM posters on this thread have the same feelings they have now.

Every one of us. we aren't under any delusion of what is likely to happen. we played these guys every year for decades, so we aren't strangers to the process. perhaps we just look at it differently than most.

I would much rather play bama than perennial sec doormats um and ms.

I'm in favor of this. We already went through the scheduling bs last season with Charlotte and dropping and adding games. We're locked in and have a 1 mil payday this year. Not sure what NC State pays? That's the main thing to be aware of. The secondary issue is "do we want to?" Meh, I'd prefer not to play a Alabama until we have a full defensive recruiting cycle.

If you check the history we have done as well as anyone against them. Including beating Bear in his last game at home. If you want to be the best, you gotta play the best.

What? Does a 77-3 loss "impress scouts"??? I'm sorry, but I don't think you understand where our program is right now. I love ODU football as much as the next guy, but we would NOT have a "good showing" at Alabama. We could barely get double digits against Maryland last year, what makes you think we'd get anywhere close to Alabama in '15? You know what I would think is an impressive win? Vs NC State, who we have at home! Hell, having a winning record would be better than 90% of FBS startups!! So say we drop NSU or EMU. And then we get slaughtered in Tuscaloosa. Now we probably not only have a demoralizing loss to deal with, but also injuries and fatigue. Remember, we won't even have Heinicke, and you want to drop the only possible 'gimmie' game on our schedule? "Yes Bentley, we're going to ease you in as our new starting QB as a RS Freshman by playing Alabama, good luck!" Stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid.

Getting body dropped by Alabama is not in our best interests, and refusing to put ourselves in that situation is not cowardice or fear. It's being smart.

RE: ODU rejects offer to play Alabama in 2015
Forgive me for not having a pussified view of our football program. After all, our own Coach Wilder said ODU was ready to compete in the FBS. In his final press conference of last season, I believe he proclaimed that ODU is now in the FBS. I wonder what FBS he was talking about. Was it the FBS "Infant" division? I've never heard of that. I believe there's only one FBS where FBS teams play each other.

"but I don’t think playing a game against Alabama would be an advisable move given the infancy of our program" .... Wood Selig

I guess we just insulted NC State and Vandy because we would play them but dare not challenge Alabama because they're so much better than those two. Nevermind that, what kind of message does that send our kids. Our motto is Aim High, except for Alabama....that's too high.

It's funny that a few ODU fans who don't want us to play Bama are the same fans who joke a certain FCS fan base by boasting that ODU has passed them by and moved up to "Big Boy" football.

FIU, WKU, Western Carolina, Colorado State, UL, Monroe, Middle Tenn., UTEP, GSU and GSU all manned up and played Alabama this past decade. Sure they lost of course but none gave up 77 points either. Heck in 03-04 Northern Illinois beat The Crimson Tide.

I certainly wouldn't be impressed with a win against a MEAC school. My point was only to compare an FCS game against this one. I prefer a chance against Alabama in Tuscaloosa over a game against an FCS team we're supposed to beat. Like I said in my previous post, we should play them beat down or not. Just a first down against the Tide would make it worth it. I'm realistic about the outcome, but to see The Monarchs on the same field with the Tide just 5 years after our first snap would have been an experience to behold despite the impending result.

ODU should have found a way to accommodate Alabama.

We like to think small time at USM, and don't mind being compared to Jackson State and Alcorn State with our scheduling strategy. We think winning one out if fifteen is wonderful and like being called a "giant killer", instead of winning our conference and bowl games.

Old Dominion recently turned down a $1.3 million payday from Alabama to play a game at Bryant-Denny Stadium in 2015, according to a report Thursday from the Virginian-Pilot.

The Monarchs, who have been playing football since 2009, will log their first season at the Football Bowl Subdivision as a member of Conference USA in 2014. Their 2015 non-conference schedule is full (Eastern Michigan, Norfolk State, North Carolina State and Appalachian State), and athletic director Wood Selig said he didn't see the need to rearrange it.

"We’ve already got 12 games,” Selig told the Virginian-Pilot. "I’d certainly touch base with (coach) Bobby Wilder on this, but I don’t think playing a game against Alabama would be an advisable move given the infancy of our program."

ODU has a full schedule. I doubt ole 'Baka would rearrange their schedule to help ODU

No, it is in Norfolk at Foreman Field at S. B. Ballard Stadium. We have a home & home, two game agreement with NC State. The first game is there this year, and the second is in Norfolk in 2015.

We are 1-23 over the last 2 years but we are going over there this year.

I'm not sure people are understanding what Bama was asking for.

Alabama wants ODU to cancel either a FCS home game, which everyone plays against a city rival OR cancel an ACC opponent coming to Norfolk.

No program would go along with that.

Actually Bob "Kayo" Marcum would have and probably even told 'bama to keep the money.
