Still doesn't get rid of my pet peeves (University Plaza, Illini Tire,) and doesn't address the need for an imposing, badass front entrance to the University at the intersection of Annie Glidden and Lincoln Hwy but otherwise, this is Vision.

Ya the university really needs to get make a "Welcome to NIU" billboard happen on the face of the railroad bridge on Annie Glidden just before Lincoln Hwy.

Your lot L should be safe until at least the 2019 season since the new rec is not in the 5 year plan.

To add some context to bridge, here is a post and responses from a few years ago about that railroad bridge and the trouble with even touching it.....

http://csnbbs.com/thread-491105-post-640...pid6401135

TL;DR : All bridges like this are covered in lead paint. So the cost of cleaning and repainting the bridges is prohibitive.

Back in the day I used to work for the State of Illinois for the House of Representatives. The Rep I was assigned to in the Mokena area had a new restaurant where the road to the main entrance went under a railroad bridge, just like the bridge over Annie Glidden.

The bridge in question in Mokena was old and run down with lots of peeling paint and rust, which is probably like 100% of all metal bridges in the State.

The owners of the restaurant wanted to paint the name of their restaurant on the bridge, with an arrow pointing towards the entrance. They would pay all the cost, they just wanted to get all the right permits etc.... just like you think NIU would like to do to that bridge.

The owners called the Rep's office, and she put me in charge of seeing who / what / why / when and where the owners needed to go to talk to the right people to do this; the owners had previously gotten the run around from the railroad and the State about who was responsible for what.

When you work for the Legislature, we get this super secret phone book, in a maroon color with the Seal of the Great State of Illinois on the cover. It basically has the direct line of just about every single important person in the State, and most importantly, the name and phone numbers of the Legislative Liaisons for each Agency in the State.

I finally figure out who to call at the the Department of Transportation, and they put me in touch with the head bridge engineer for the State. I start to explain what we are looking for and he cuts me off to tell me no; all the bridges are covered in lead paint and because of environmental regulations surrounding the remediation and abatement of lead paint, it was too expensive to reclaim and paint all but the very most important bridges. Even painting water based paints over the lead paint released enough lead dust to require the whole area to be cordoned off, sealed and overpressured to collect the dust, then the dust had to be properly disposed of etc etc.

Typical government......

And now you know why the bridge leading into DeKalb looks as sheety as it does, and now you know why it will remain looking like that until the State is forced to replace the bridge.

So don't touch it just mount something in front of it by a few feet.

They also have those concrete retaining walls that could use some red/black NIU mural...if they can touch it that is!

I understand the disdain for Illini Tire but why the UP?

UP is in the way of a cohesive campus, like a little snaggle tooth biting into the campus......

A long time ago, in the middle 90's, I understood that UP was the preferred location for the new Convocation Center. Can you imagine how much better the campus would be with the Convo in that location, perhaps supported by other campus buildings taking the place of VCB and those apartments on the corner of Lucinda and Russell?

That time is long since past. However, the 50 year plan seems to address the plot of land just south of UP so maybe something is still there?

And since it's a railroad bridge, it could easily be covered by some weird federal railroad regulation concerning bridges, or need some special rules certification to go near it just to construct the sign. And I'm sure Union Pacific would want rent for putting a sign on their bridge.

RE: Campus Upgrades?
For Huskie Stadium, what are the chances the choose to enclose the south end of the stadium with additional seating and some luxury sky box areas? It doesn't seem cost effective to add on a second level, or knock down the west side. We could close down the street just south of the stadium, increase stadium capacity, add some better concession/merchandise areas, and build a luxury donor area that most people seem to be requesting. The merchandise and concession areas available on the west side are comparable to a high school stadium. East side is at least a little more updated. The one issue would be relocating the scoreboard somewhere where it is convenient for everyone.

What does everyone think of renovating the south side of the stadium and leaving the other sides as they are?

Based on the 50 year map I would say not a very good chance. We should know this summer when Frazier comes out with the Athletic Master Plan. Either way we should see a gutting of the West side of Huskie Stadium or a new skybox structure as the next BIG project on deck.

I'm all in favor of Illini Tire staying, but only if they change their name to "NorIll Tire".

I don't interpret the map as such as the South University Entrance Quad seems to still be private property according to the map key. But with the low quality maybe I am wrong.
