Another large city Democrat mayor breaking the law and arrested. Detroit, New Orleans, Trenton, NJ and now Charlotte NC.

Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon was arrested Wednesday on federal public corruption laws, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Charlotte.

Cannon was charged with theft and bribery after an FBI sting operation, said Anne Tompkins, U.S. attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

FBI agents – working on a tip that Cannon, 47, was potentially involved in illegal activities – started an investigation in August 2010.

Cannon solicited and accepted money bribes and things of value from undercover FBI agents, who were posing as commercial real estate developers and investors wishing to do business in Charlotte, authorities said.

The evidence against him seems to be air tight.

I voted for his opponent. His opponent was a very moderate republican that understood the need for smart growth in a fast growing city, but opposed wasteful projects. I'm hoping he will run again when we hold a special election to fill the mayor's spot. I think he'll win this time around.

Birmingham's last mayor is still a guest of the state.

When I was in El Paso, one of the guys I worked with transferred to Charlotte. He couldn't get out of there fast enough.

When I was working there I lived in Charlotte for about 5 years, fed up with the taxes I moved to a nearby county purchased a house worth twice as much and my taxes went down.

I just flew to Charlotte last week for a meeting and the whole time I thought I was in NC. I guess I missed something. Maybe I was the Land of Oz instead.

As far as location, it's actually in North Carolina. Eastern NC has separated into a new state called "East Carolina."

Some people refer to Charlotte as the "State of Charlotte" or the "State of Mecklenburg" because it has always been sorta independent of the rest of the state (Raleigh and the eastern powers in the state did not/do not like Charlotte).

He could be making a joke based on that, I'm not sure though.

If he was the only black Democratic mayor caught, shouldn't the charges be dropped?
