RE: Northwestern Players granted right to vote to unionize
Editorial cartoons like this try to perpetuate this idea that college athletics is a gold mine for all. Yet, only 22 FBS athletic departments are making any money (I found this info to be a few years old, but I imagine it's still roughly the same now). The rest of us in FBS are in the red. Not one FCS athletic department operated in the black.

I had always assumed that $40-60K worth of education and never worrying about student loans - in addition to having that outside chance at making 1%-er "pro money" upon graduation/draft that every other student doesn't have - was sufficient compensation. And as others have correctly pointed out, it would open up a Pandora's box of questions and debate.

But I do agree with CD that players oughta be permitted to profit off their own image from t-shirts, jerseys, autographs, etc., and being able to promote themselves as such.

That "not making money" thing is a misnomer in fund based and not for profit style accounting.

There's plenty of cash making it's way to people's pockets who are aligned to the Athletic Departments and the Universities. THAT should be the real measure.

The NCAA itself has no problem generating a positive cash flow.

I don't get it at all. In the early 90's I would get 3 grand to live for 4 months and every kid that didn't have parents to help them got a Pell grant that doubled the check I got. We could work in the summer May, June and July making enough money to live with jobs from boosters. Money was never an issue for me in college, we lived in the ghetto with our own rooms and we didn't even have a training table to eat twice a day. We would goto the dorms on occasion and use a freshmans card to eat in the dorms. Unless things have changed a ton, graduating with no student loans was good for me.

that is way the Power 5 want to get rid of them. NCAA is just like a middle man for them who they don't need.

It seems that it is never about "good enough".

It is about whether one's piece of the pie is "fair".

I am sitting here right now in pain almost 20 years since I finished playing and I have no complaints and would do it all over again knowing the consequences.

Your point is spot on. Everyone thinks they have to get "theirs".

Now if they go after health coverage after their playing days, I will be lining up for the thousands I have paid over the years in out of pocket.

Wait, isn't being "fair" just another sense of socialism?

IMHO, "fair" is simply whatever 2 parties agree to.

I don't know what's "fair" anymore, though I do know it still happens once a year in Otsego County. 04-rock

So you're saying that when you don't agree with a deal or even with your disposition, it's not fair? Ut ohhhhhhh....Glad I didn't think that way these last few months when I was out humping the bushes looking for gigs and getting beat out by "firms" from the far east.

I am JK of course, that discussion could go on forever. The only thing that adds up for me is "life ain't fair" and "no one here gets out alive".

The rest is all conjecture.
