CUSA related? UMASS FB has to leave MAC
Brett McMurphy reporting that UMASS was offered full MAC membership and declined. They have 2 years to leave.

Do you think they are viable for the AAC? I know their stadium needs a vast upgrade but other than that they seem like a good fit.

RE: CUSA related? UMASS FB has to leave MAC
The MAC really wanted UMass basketball but UMass didn't want to leave the A10 for hoops. The only FBS conference I could see UMass becoming a full member of would be the AAC.

So they hire their old FCS coach Whipple again, and now they have to leave the MAC in two years. To the uninformed observer, it would appear that the situation is either AAC or pack up and go back to the CAA. I don't see them going Indy, since that would be like floundering right into the frying pan.

Sun Belt does need a 12th football member. They added Idaho, so adding UMASS wouldn't be much worse.

A tweet by ESPN says that they plan to remain FBS. I think they've got something brewing with the AAC, makes perfect sense, esp. for Memphis, Cincy, UConn, etc. Those schools really want to rebuild the conference's hoops brand.

This spring they will finish renovations to their on-campus stadium but the capacity is still at 17k. They also have games at Gillette. But I don't think Gillette would really be necessary for anyone in the AAC other than UConn, Navy and Temple.

My money is on Sun Belt. They currently have 9 full members, 2 FB only, and 2 non-FB. Adding UMASS would get them back to an even number. They can accomplish the Big East's (RIP) dream of a conference from Idaho to New England.

Don't they have plans to expand the stadium in phase II? 25,000 is plenty for UMass and could probably be done fairly cheap.

And let the C-USA, Sun Belt, and AAC speculation threads on grabbing UMASS begin!

Yep. Me too. I doubt they'd lower themselves to CUSA level though. 03-banghead

I think you're joking. And if not you're only suggesting UMass to the Belt for football only; right? There is no way UMass will leave the A-10 for the Sun Belt, they would have stayed in the MAC is that's how they were thinking.

Now the MAC needs to plan its future so they gave UMass the ultimatum (probably just enforcing the original contract at this time). From what we're saying here, UMass football is not up to AAC snuff. However, an agreement between them and the AAC may be enough to get the UMass admin' to open up the pocketbook.

Does the MAC want/need to expand to 14? I don't see why.

Expansion was wrongfully assumed as part of the renovations. They currently have no plans to expand the seating:

I mean Sun Belt FB only. That would give our Sunny brothers 12 FB teams and a title game.

If that were to happen, then that would suggest that UMass was caught completely off-guard by the MAC enforcing their agreement. I really don't think this is the case.

However, if the UMass admin (who just tweetted they plan to stay FBS) is so wishy-washy as to not have a plan already in place, then a temporary football move to the SBC may be a last alternative.

Again, I don't think that's the case. They must be planning, through closed-door conversations, a move to the AAC. Such a weak football program would not last long as an indy either. I think it's AAC or bust.

I'm not entirely convinced that C-USA has given up on the 16 idea.

UMASS has hired Carr group to help them identify their best FBS conference options.

My guess is SBC football only, or American all-sports.

C-USA won't go to 16 until there is an imperative to do so. Besides who's out there who would be willing to move that we would want?

I'm pretty sure they hired the Carr Group a while ago. The fruit of that hire may be about to be plucked.
