RE: Is Cuonzo Martin a good coach
Soap Box Time: I'm somewhat peeved that News3 has actually sent a crew to Indianapolis to cover the Vols. There just isn't that much interest for UT hoops here. I know we're in the same state but geez, UT is 400 miles away in a different time zone. They're giving the same coverage they gave the Tigers to UTK. I honestly don't know why.

Questions like these are why judging success of the NCAA's is laughable. A month ago Martin was on the bubble, on the hot seat, and hated in Knoxville. Now he is a "good coach?"

Fact is he caught a favorable matchup in a play-in game, played a overseeded UMass team, and then lucked out with a 14 seed beating the 3 seed in his bracket. He caught some HUGE breaks. The way things crumble.

And I've seen others on here say "Pastner wouldn't have won those games"....and think they are dead wrong.

RE: Is Cuonzo Martin a good coach
As a Vol fan, I like Cuonzo. Much like Pastner, he has been a good rep for the school and during his tenure has maintained a team that has stayed out of trouble.

I do not think that there are that many that have been enamored with his recruiting. He's landed two 5* in Stokes and Hubbs, but I can admit those situations were aided by circumstances that will not always align for him. He has picked up a few kids like Armani Moore, Josh Richardson, and AJ Davis that are/will be good SEC players, but vs the UK's and UF's of the league are not world beaters.

Too many on here read Volnation and take it verbatim as the thoughts of UT fans. If you divert to some other TN boards you might see a more basketball and rational/realistic crowd of TN fans.

Based on it talent level, TN underachieved most of the season. You never know what team would show up. I think criticism was warranted, although I thought the Pearl Petition was over board. To me, the criticism of the coach and team mixed with the loss at Texas A&M created the perfect storm....it seem to create the us against the world mentality and force the team to bond and play as a team. They get the ball inside more, tend to have better shot selection from outside, and their defense has been far more effective against the 3pt.

Like I said, I like Cuonzo the person. Guy has been through a lot in his life (tough childhood, cancer, etc) and seems to handle himself with class. I am still not sold on Cuonzo the coach who can consistently compete for championships. He has won a good clip of his games in league, but the talent level is trending down and with additions like Pearl at Auburn, the league certainly won't get easier. In a league with several personalities, he far to often seems to void of emotion as well.

My thought is that if there was a job he could get and would take this year, he would bolt. I see him getting through next year and if Painter can't turn Purdue around, then he bolts for that job. Purdue fans love and want them some Cuonzo. I don't think the recent success is a sudden trending up...I think its a combo of his team buying in at the right time mixed with some good match ups and a few breaks going their way.

Also: I think it's not right to say Martin was hated a month ago. People were disgruntled at the under performance of his team and his typical lack of emotion on the sideline. Most seem to like him as a person though. When I think of coach hatred, I tend to think of Kiffin and Dooley.

The guy has done a good job, there were chemistry issues with this team earlier in the year.

Living in this part of the state, Chattanooga, I've heard all the complaints and bring back Pearl stuff.

I do question he and his staffs ability to recruit elite level players, I think next years roster without Stokes won't be that good.

As far as the NBA for Stokes , he will get a shot, he's moved up and down the floor better during the tournament.

Scouts question his lift and his ability to guard an NBA level athlete.

We shall see

People I've talked to that are close to him and his family think he's gone

A month ago? Heck, my Vol fan friends wanted him gone a week ago. Then, Pearl takes the Auburn job and the Vols win 3 NCAA games.

It Martin's defense, losing Trey Golden in the offseason and Hubbs getting hurt didn't help them earlier in the season. Put those 2 guys on the team and maybe the edge out Kentucky for 2nd place in the SEC.

Cuonzo didn't "lose" Trey Golden. He sent him packing.

From what I saw of Hubbs, he wasn't ready to contribute this seasn. Much like Iverson.

Are the Arkansas fans aware of this?

His team actually plays competent defense vs chasing the ball like a chicken with it's head cut off....plus his team doesn't allow the opponent to run layup drills IN GAME so yea, he's a good coach.

Ask stokes. He stated Cuonzo taught him how to play on the post. What a concept, helping a player improve...

UT has not defeated a Pastner coached team so using your logic Martin must really suck! How could a good coach not beat a Pastner coached team?????? Guess he does suck then. Oh well.

Just a horrible analogy esp when Pastner lost twice to Robo-Doh...do we really want to go there?
