Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford will participate in a press conference on Wednesday, March 26. The event will be available for LIVE viewing (CLICK HERE) beginning at 10:00 a.m. Please check back for more information.

Barclays Center Announces Agreements with ACC and Atlantic 10

ACC Tournament comes to Barclays Center in Brooklyn in 2017 and 2018
Atlantic 10 Championship Extended in Brooklyn for 2019, 2020 and 2021

I don't recall live streaming the press conferences and arranging multi-year deals with mid-major conferences to order to play in the second fiddle venue of any other city. Someone(s) must have really targeted a presence in NYC as an important strategic goal, and it can't just be Syracuse and Pitt.

Well, I think that the ACC has, for sure. It is a big game of Risk with the Big Ten, I think.

ND is always very interested in playing any sport in the New York City area.

Obviously, it was rhetorical. When it leaks that Roy and K are in support of it, you know it is going to happen. The ACC needs it there, and the home office is pushing it. Everyone around the table realizes it. It is only fans that stomp their feet about no longer having 60 minute drives and $60 hotel rooms that don't.

Yep we'll see what kind of "flavor" the championship game takes on over the next three years.
This year there were at least 10,000 Dook fans at the championship game, another 8,000 to 9,000 UVa fans and then another 4,000 hold overs from other schools who were just there to see the championship, like me.
Next year if UVa makes the finals they will be able to make the trip to DC and fill at least 1/2 of the arena on one days notice like they did in Greensboro. But the question that is yet to be answered is: when the tournament moves to New York, will the same UVa fan drive from Richmond on Saturday morning in the hopes of being able to buy a ticket for the Saturday night final?
You can make fun of those 60 minute drives, but I'll wager you that more than half of the 23,000 or so that were in the Greensboro Coliseum on Sunday afternoon drove no more that 60 minutes to get to the game, and if you expanded the time to 120 minutes, 80% or more. The other 15-20% may have been staying in hotels in Greensboro. That's the way the tournament has always been. Most of the ticket holders of the losing teams turn their tickets over to the fans of the schools still in the tournament, who have always been there to scoop them up....it keeps everything in the family.
I have no doubt that the tournament will sell out in New York, but it's who is sitting in the seats that has me concerned.

XLance...tons of tickets will trade among the ACC alumni whom work in Manhattan. It will be a different crowd from Greensboro but still an ACC crowd.

It won't be the "right" ACC crowd for some. But "Keeping things in the family" = no growth. It is the antithesis to why the conference jumped through major hoops to move the tournament there.

Google "ACC Barclays" and see how much media attention just the announcement of this received in the news today, a story that was really broken two weeks ago, and compare it to how much it got when it was announced for DC or anywhere else. NY Times, NY Post, NY Daily News, Wall Street Journal, NYC local tv, every dinky paper in the tristate, and major papers in essentially every major outlet. The conference office knows what it is doing, thank goodness.

The regular season double header is also good because the ACC will have what appears to be another branded event in NYC.

What is also flying under the radar is the extension the A10 got at Barclays. When the ACC leaves after 2018, the A10 gets locked back in there for three more years while the ACC placates its history by going back to where the primary local coverage will be the News & Record.

XLance, I can't find UNC's stats but the number two state for UVA students behind Virginia is New York and I assume it is in the top 5 for UNC, BC and Duke. It's second by a lot for Pitt and is obviously number one for Syracuse students. There will be plenty of ACC family, alum, students, etc. in the New York area.

RE: Barclays Center/ACC full press release
The only folks who are really annoyed about this are the Tobacco Road schools... I love it. Miami has a huge alumni base in NYC and I'm sure we could try to somehow get several thousand fans if we happen to be worth a crap. There are three major UMAA bases right around the PA-NJ-NY area, and NYC is a hub for Miami alumni. Perhaps our basketball fan base will be motivated by New York City as compared to Greensboro -- HINT... THEY WILL. No one at Miami wants to go to Hicktown, NC (no offense, but I've actually heard this said lol), but everyone wants to go to NYC, man. It's just how it works! I'll make my plans to to be there. Go Canes! 04-cheers

I strongly believe the BEST basketball tourney should always play in NYC that city LOVE'S basketball and our fan-base's populate NYC like no other.

I like it being in Greensboro for just the reason you said. I live about an hour north of Charlottesville and could drive down to the game I wanted to see and then drive back home if the Heels lost. If they won, I would just stay there because it is where I am from. Still doesn't bother me for it to go to NYC. It has rotated plenty of tiimes. It will still come back to NC, so its cool.

This is the correct answer. You have to have experienced NYC once or twice before you get it.

I attended the games in Greensboro this year and I must say that I liked it. The people were friendly and the prices were very affordable for everything from lodging to gas to food. I also liked the parking around the arena and the arena itself. It was HUGE and not dated at all!

However, it's not even close to NYC and I think everyone will agree with that sentiment after they have a basis to compare the two. That said, my NYC basketball experience is limited to MSG. I have never been to the Barclay's Center and it may not be as cool. That must be acknowledged. However, I suspect that the sheer energy around the arena prior to the game will blow away folks and make this debate a moot point.

Still, they need to MOVE the championship game to Saturday night. That will make a HUGE difference.

Barclay Center is no MSG...

Madison Square Garden is surrounded by the energy of Manhattan... tall buildings, endless shopping, bars, eateries, and people!

Barclay center while a beautiful modern facility with every creature comfort is located in a neighborhood across the river in Brooklyn.

Now, obviously still more energy than parking lot ville around Greensboro Coliseum, but still not "THE CITY!" Those of us who have lived in NYC, know that even people in the outter Boroughs of NYC (Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn) say/call Manhattan "the City."

I didn't realize they were refusing to play Pitt home and home. I was wondering why those series weren't happening.

Yeah the old hoops only schools are acting like scorned lovers against the old BE football schools that left for the ACC.

Not with Syracuse. But Nova and Georgetown have little to gain by playing Pitt home-and-home, at least the way they see things now.

G'town won't play us because they don't like our fans filling up their home court.

The St. Johns and Nova games we have are great though.

We have a ten game series against Georgetown. They will play us. They just won't sell tickets to non-Georgetown alumni associations.

You're undoubtedly right. There is nothing in this country quite like Manhattan and MSG. That's been my point all along vis-a-vie the ACC's conference tournament.

I think Barclay's will be a much cooler experience than Greensboro but not quite as cool as MSG. What is the name of that HUGE Irish bar that is literally right around the corner from MSG? That may be my favorite bar in the world.

Guys, we're getting 2 years of ACC basketball tournaments in the best available venue in NYC. Must you guys whine about the fact that it isn't MSG? Please, enough... if MSG were available the ACC would be there, but it isn't.

Let me explain a little about Yankees. It isn't whining. It is bitching and we LOVE to *****. We are not happy if we are not bitching about something.
