RE: Dad's great response to a Common Core Math question
I saw that yesterday. My daughter had a similar type math problem (second grade) and was showing me how her teacher told her to solve the problem. I showed her the old school way and she was like, "Dad, that is soooooooooo much easier." Just hope the teacher doesn't penalize her for solving the problem differently than she was told. I guess getting the right answer isn't really the point anymore. :sigh:

It's just weird. I mean they take simple concepts and make them so damn complicated. How in the world is doing THAT supposed to help kids learn?

you are the type of prick that likes to argue over anything.

scientific theories and their importance change over time as our understanding changes with new evidence.

basic math has been the same since the times of the greeks and will continue to be the same until the earth stops spinning.

comprende? or do I have to paint a picture for you to get the point?

i can understand teaching the "subtract by 100s then 10s, then 1s" style of doing a problem. but i have always viewed that as a secondary way of teaching it for someone who can't understand the regular way.

i still haven't found any rationale to explain the common cores insane way of teaching rounding. Theres a pic going around where a worksheet says 492 should be rounded down to 400 and 532 should be rounded up to 600.

RE: Dad's great response to a Common Core Math question
My sons first grade common core math work sheets are made up of mostly word problems,
not a bad thing... but they frequently contain words like “Symmetry” “Diagonal” and “Ellipse
which are a bit beyond the average six/seven year-old reading ability. Oddly enough, the simple
math of those word problems are way beneath a first graders ability, easily solvable by the majority of Kindergartners.

What, exactly, is the point of common core anyways? All I can tell is that it takes you 5 minutes to figure out the answer to 50-49.

I did not know stating a fact was "arguing"... And when one decides to run around calling people pricks for such a post as I put up they can hardly take the high ground.

Mechanics has not changed a whole lot since Newton and it's not going to change while the earth is spinning... I guess that branch of Physics is no longer a science..

Don't get pissed about someone trying to enlighten you..

It's suppose to teach you *WHY* an answer it what it is... It's a dumb ass way of teaching kids which was designed by captains of industry and is being forced in by promises of federal money.

I never memorized the basic strategy card for blackjack but took the time to understand why, for example, you don't split 9s when the dealer is showing a 7.

They taught us how to use our fingers to count... 5 fingers, take away 3, I have 2 left, so 5-3=2... Common core is not common sense...

Common Core is STUPID. As a person that has taken advanced classes in math, this will not get more students into math. Some kids are just plain bad at math, so common core tries to help them to understand how subtraction and addition work -- instead of how to get the correct answer. I am okay with that for students that are exceptionally behind. These are not kids that are going to make it to AP Calc, so slowing down math for them could be useful. However, if kids get it that 587-476=111, then they should move forward using the traditional concepts. There is a lot of ground to cover in math and, later on, math gets REALLY hard and good students cannot waste time on this common crap nonsense, or else they'll be even further behind.

I have absolutely no idea what the question is asking for. What is a number line?

You're supposed to first subtrct each "hundred" then each "ten" and then the "ones"

Jacks problem is he did not do the "tens"

How can you tell that by looking at that picture? I honestly have no idea what the hell that thing is, and I actually kinda get math... hahha. What a clusterf#$%.
