RE: Football will now charge for parking
Smart thing to do when the team has won 4 games in two years...

RE: Football will now charge for parking
I see it as a non-issue. It'll bring a marginal increase in home game revenue, while students still have option for free transportation. I don't see this deterring anyone from coming to games.

Yeah it might not be an issue, but there aren't many things we have going for us on the football front.... at least parking was one of them !03-lmfao

I'm fine with this as long as they re-pave the main parking lot.

Perhaps it could go to a new videoboard, which I've been begging for since my first game at Rynearson. I'd like a screen (approximately) 1000x larger.

I don't have a problem as long as they keep ticket prices the same. The cost to collect the $5 will probably almost exceed the revenue generated or take a big piece of it.

RE: Football will now charge for parking
Dear Friends,
I'm almost positive, that when they charged for parking in the past, it was collected by other varsity team members, like the baseball team, and they got a cut of the proceeds or maybe all of it. If they charge $5 a vehicle and there are 1,000 of them that's $5,000. Not a lot, but with five home games that could end up being $25,000 being collected.
They probably did away with the parking charge to draw more fans with free parking, but if the product on the field doesn't change the attendance won't increase.
On the subject of ticket pricing, at ten dollars a seat, you can't find a cheaper athletic event. Eastern needs to increase the price of a ticket, and if the team improves record wise, it will be worth it.

Don't agree about increasing the ticket prices Ken. No one comes even with $11 dollar tickets and frankly the product on the field probably deserves that outcome and the current price. The only positive EMU has going for it is that is family friendly a selling point that has rarely been marketed. You also forget that when people decide on coming to games they factor in traveling costs. And of course the 2014 schedule really sucks for home games. You can raise the ticket prices all you want and if you have basically a poor weather schedule its not going to attract people. Not one home game in September? Which idiot in the MAC thought that one up?

You raise the ticket price IF and WHEN the team improves not before.

Creighton's current salary isn't really much more than English's. Lets see some results before we change ticket prices.

Dear emu79,
While I do not necessarily disagree with some of your points, ticket prices for home football games have been at ten dollars for years.
On scheduling, we have Gragg and English to thank for the non-league game schedule at the beginning. I don't know if Akron could have been a home game, but why throw in a bye week so that Eastern has what.... five or six straight weeks of no home games, in the prime of best possible weather conditions? So, I agree with you there. Hopefully, the next few years will be better with the home game scheduling.

It'll help non revenue sports teams just as selling programs helps. Volleyball use to be free as well but they started charging about 6 years ago. I pay even though I could get in for free I believe in supporting the trams anyway I can. I suspect they will be charging for baseball soon.

Well Ken, it depends on the amount of the price increase, I wouldn't be opposed to anything in the $1-$5 dollar range in terms of an increase.

On the parking side of things does this means they are going to charge for parking for the men's and women's basketball games as well as football?

Dear emu79,
I have heard of a five dollar increase in ticket prices, but don't quote me on it. Good question on the basketball games. That, I don't know about.

Ken, that would be fine if they keep it at $5 or under. People need to keep in mind that sports competes in the entertainment business.

Which brings me to my next point, lets say the ticket prices get raised $5 per ticket? What am I getting for the extra $5? Better facilities? Better concessions? Better football team? A new scoreboard? Just an open question.

A $5 increase would be a 33% increase. Did any of us who attend these games get a 33% pay increase last year to put more prospective on the question. I mean I can afford the increase because I only go to one-three games each year, however I'm not going to take the kids because all of this adds up for most people.

I don't have a problem with it. Every other MAC school charges for parking regardless of their record. Even high schools charge for parking.

Dexter doesn't, Chelsea doesnt, Skyline doesn't... most of the schools in the surrounding area dont.

You're right. My bad. EMU is on par with local high schools so they shouldn't charge for parking either. That makes perfect sense.

It has nothing to do with being "on-par" with other MAC schools or high schools for that matter. It has to do with what works for the situation at Eastern Michigan University, that is all. There are three questions which are imperative to this change; 1. How much money will be generated from charging for parking? 2. Where will this money being going to? (Other posters alluded to other Varsity Student Athletes running this and reaping a portion of the profits) 3. Will this profit generated outweigh the loss or potential loss of fans who will not come solely because of a new fee?

Unfortunately I see this deterring many students from coming to games. Yes there are and will continue to be shuttle services from campus to Rynearson but most students especially those who live off campus or commute will not be able to use this service. $5 is not a lot, but in the eyes of a poor college student that is the difference between a dinner and no dinner at times. It also makes the event which used to be scotch free for students, not free.
