OT: "Real Sports" with Bryant Gumbel to hammer Academics
Tuesday night on HBO.

Here's the link from the NY Post about the segment scheduled for tomorrow night: "Academic Corruption continues"

Real Sports segment an eye-opener
"Given that HBO has no NCAA deals to stop it, and given that your better senses likely can handle the ugliest of truths, watch “Real Sports” Tuesday night at 10, featuring Bernard Goldberg’s piece on the staggering, worsening academic corruption on behalf of football and basketball at Baylor, Oklahoma, Memphis, Iowa State and North Carolina — all NCAA Tournament qualifiers."

LINK: From the Carolina News Observer

The segment, reported by Bernard Goldberg and produced by Josh Fine, looks at how lower admission standards, coupled with higher graduation requirements, have required many top schools to commit to learning specialists to ensure student athletes can keep up. Goldberg interviews Mary Willingham, a UNC whistle-blower who formerly worked with athletes. Willingham has claimed to have data showing that 60 percent of 183 athletes at UNC, specially tested over an eight-year period, could not read at the high school level and that another 10 percent could not read above the third-grade level. Goldberg also interviews two football players from the university – Michael McAdoo and Bryan Bishop.

“Real Sports” says its investigative team spent six months vetting multi-million dollar academic advising centers, which are responsible for helping student-athletes with “elementary educations” graduate from college. In addition to UNC, the episode looks at programs at the University of Memphis and University of Oklahoma.

We all know it happens everywhere. All you have to do is listen to a post game interview with most of these kids and you can tell, that they don't belong in college and are their strictly to help win games. jmo

Hell, I really admire kids from Stanford, Rice, The Academies and the Ivy schools, etc. who excel in the classroom as well as the field of competition.

Yeah, it's a shame some don't take advantage of the opportunities in front of them...can't judge though as I've let some slip through my fingertips for various reasons myself. I read an article on the Cathey fellow supposedly highlighted in the show. Sad :( It makes me want to love on my kids all the more and create an environment that fosters the skills and confidence they need to thrive in the world. It's hard to see the forest for the trees when you're living day by day.

You mean Marshall wasn't mentioned? 04-jawdrop According to some fans from other conferences we're on the verge of an academic transgression. 03-lmfao

That is what you have to say about this?

WOW. Guess you weren't kidding shiftyeagle. The priorities of the fans of one of these schools is shown by brushing this off. Very alarming.

I know this kind of crap goes on at USM, and probably most other CUSA schools outside of Rice.

Agreed, but the issue is not irrelevant. Can and should be addressed imo

agreed....however, once the power has been achieved, 'at all costs' is fair game....it's a sad state of affairs, eh?

Judging a person's intelligence by how they talk is folly.

It is highlighting a few schools. You're an ignoramus if you think none of the northern schools cheat their kids the way through college.

They are highlighting universities this week. They don't do junior colleges until next week. So relax.

Is that how you were brought up, to name call at the first sign of disagreement? Have a little decorum if you will. Of course I realise that; it was my point.

geez, there are some real backward yahoo's on this board; almost makes me long for our days back in the Sun Belt.

p.s. holy crap, you're a moderator too. do they seek your type out for that post.

And without naming particular schools, one of the ones I had in mind comes out of the woodwork. The obsession continues...

Was only name-calling if you're actually stupid enough to believe what you said.....I hope you were simply being hypothetical.

You see, you aren't stupid or an ignoramus unless you're actually stupid or an ignoramus.
