RE: Some of you act as if
Excellent post, OP. and to clarify that does not mean we stop trying to improve. (seeing a whole lot of straw men in this thread) It does mean that we have been better than we are right now, and we have been worse. The problem is that the success or failure of a basketball program is being judged on a one and done tournament. And that is ridiculous. This was a good year that ended in disappointment, and by the way EVERY year we have ended in disappointment, because we have NEVER won the title. To the OP's point is silly to be angry that we didn't make the sweet 16, more often than not we don't.

Now the blow out losses this season, FIVE OF THEM. You don't have to be a blue blood program to be better than that, and while that is nowhere close to a firing offense, those failures, are a legitimate concern for our coach going forward. He needs to figure that out. Memphis can't expect to get all the world beating recruits, we can't expect to get all the favorable calls, and we can not expect to be given favorable seeds that make our tourney draw easier, but by god we CAN expect a consistency of effort and not getting humiliated. Coach needs to work on that AND he would need to work on it EVEN if we made the sweet 16.

I can tell you why I think we should be an elitist university. Because we have great history. With great players . We are a great city, and have a great basketball tradition. We haven't had just one good run. We have had several. We have an nba arena. great facilities. great fans.

We could just watch Louisville, and Kentucky, and Kansas and others continue to win, and be ok with just being ok. That's just not me though.

I love your zeal...I really do. But seriously? We do not have a "great history", or "great basketball tradition". We have 3 final fours in forever, your tradition probably only goes back 10-15 years. We have a great arena and great fans, I love the university, but seriously.

By the way....let's use UCLA as an example...compare UCLA when Wooden left to Memphis when Cal left.

We have had serious runs in every decade since I was born in the 70's. I don't comment on era's before that, because I don't know. Im just saying, we might not be UCLA, but why can't we be.

Well, then, I'll comment. We also had good runs in the 1950's and 1960's. We have a proud history, a history many schools would love to have, and a very unique history here in this town.

ESPN ranked us as the 19th most successful bb program from 1962 to 2012 in their annual list.

In 1952, John Wallesea became the first Memphis State player to be drafted by the NBA. Forest Arnold became the school's first All-American in 1954. The Tigers made the NCAA tournament for the first time in 1955 under coach Eugene Lambert. Bob Vanatta became the team's coach in 1956 and took the Tigers to the NIT final. Win Wilfong became the team's second All-American in 1957. The NIT was as big a deal back then as the NCAA tournament.

The 1960's produced three NBA players, one of which was Wayne Yates.

We lucked out with the Grizz move to Memphis. It's a bit embarrassing when people bring up our budget and facilities as a means of including us in the elite.

It's not embarrassing to our recruits. Kentucky has been playing in a real old dump until now, and have you seen where Tennessee plays?

Not a bad outlook, but if you have reasonable expectations, then life is pretty ok usually.

I don't think any rational fan expected a F4 this year. Most wanted / expected a S16.

We didn't get it, c'est la vie.

It is possible for a team to both disappoint (fall short of the S16, lose 7 blowouts) and be a success (NCAA win, 20+ wins against a legit schedule, graduate all players).

I wish we got more, am disappointed with the end, but proud of our guys and their overall season. This season was still a success, no doubt there.

You left out those tough schools we beat, and Louisville twice! Those wins were fun.

So you have to have titles under your belt to demand that your team play defense and take better shots and run a better offense? You have to be a blue blood for your players to play with intensity or for fans to expect such things?

This isn't 1950-2003.

Compare our basketball budget, facilities, recruiting classes, salaries, etc.. To any of the so called blue bloods.

Once you do that, come back in here and tell all of us how we once again should not expect our players to play defense, take better shots and so on.

Some of you get all bent out of shape over semantics. We have a great history no doubt, but we still have no titles. You may not want to hear it but we liken ourselves to a powerhouse, and are closer to a mid major. Before we magically signed the whole Laurenberg prep class somebody tell me the last time we were in the elite eight. Our last two really great runs were what twenty years apart. This town has been starving to be a title holder so much so that we threw a parade for a NIT championship. Josh is going nowhere but up so get on this train and quit acting like twelve years old.

Josh needs help not crying babies. He needs an x's and o's guy by his side more than anything.I repeat we've never won a title. The guy is corny but he tries. Lets stop bitchin and move on,because I guarantee some other schools that didn't make the tourney would love to be in our shoes. Fire josh for what? He hasn't done anything bad enough to get fired yet,and until he does he's our coach.

I believe that I mentioned the lazy defense and the blowouts in the post.

Please compare them for me bud. I never said we were them. Or had the facilities that were dead on with the blue bloods. What I am try to do is show we are not that far off.

Someone brought up $300 Million for Kentucky to renovate. It does not change the fact that They still play in Rupp Arena and we plat in the FedEx Forum.

Let's compare recruiting classes and recruits to.

Indiana
UCLA
Kentucky
Kansas
Duke
Louisville
North Carolina
UConn

and every other team that has won a national title in the history of their program.

Let's see where we stack up.

Also, don't forget our basketball numbers ($) aren't 100% correct either. We don't break even for basketball.

Wanna talk about attendance?
Wanna talk about fan support?
Wanna talk about anything else?

Use history all you want, although 95% of it is no longer relevant.

It have been proven multiple times by multiple coaches that you can get to final fours and win titles here.

We may not be Kentucky, but we sure as hell ain't Austin Peay.

We have every advantage in the world. We have everything we need to compete.

I did leave them off, the list was not meant to be 100% comprehensive.

The Louisville, SMU, Ohio St, and Zaga wins were all an absolute blast and worthy of high praise.
