It happens. Sometimes its about more money, sometimes its about getting more responsibility to pad the resume and sometimes its just about going to a coach you've worked with before and like. I wouldn't read to much into an asst leaving for BG.
Here's a list of MAC schools ranked by bball expenses in 2013. Kent State is right there in the mix so spending shouldn't be a huge concern.
#100 $3,222,448 Ohio
#150 $2,142,779 Buffalo
#153 $2,051,314 Akron
#166 $1,900,435 Miami
#167 $1,867,684 Western Michigan
#168 $1,855,599 Kent State
#169 $1,847,789 Toledo
#196 $1,666,104 Central Michigan
#205 $1,608,150 Eastern Michigan
#213 $1,561,611 Ball State
#230 $1,460,613 Bowling Green
#234 $1,447,289 Northern Illinois
Great post, but very gray in color. The question is what are these expenses? BG is at the bottom but clearly their facilities with a brand new arena are at the top. KSU has an extremely old arena, with no practice facility, and mostly outdated locker rooms. The coaching salaries are at the bottom of the league. So if this list is the money spent on recruiting trips, hotels, per diems, and office supplies, well it's great we are right there with everyone else, but they aren't the things that matter. I doubt a coach is leaving from Toledo and going to OU because at UT he drove a Camry and at OU he gets an Explorer. See if you can find a list of each schools salary pool for all staff members. Then remember for a guy making $75,000 an extra $10-15k is a lot of money.

Ohio can afford to spend more because they get much larger crowds than anyone else in the MAC. If attendance is better, there's more cash to spend. Kent might be average in spending, but you never know how much structural costs are in there. Yes, school X might have a dedicated practice facility, but that school also has expenses to maintain the facility.

my understanding (and I could be wrong) is that this dollar amount represents all expenses associated with the program- salaries, travel, recruiting, etc. If I can find a deeper dive into how these costs are distributed I'll forward it on.

In case you are wondering, that is the same reason Jordan Mincy left. As I am sure most of you know, Jordan is now at Toledo. Continuing to lose our assistants to higher paying MAC assistant jobs isn't a good look. At some point we have to step up and show our dedication (financially) to our basketball program or we will continue to have sub-par years like the one we just endured. I guess we will see.
Anyone have any info or update on whether Coach Steinberg or any other men's BB assistants are going or staying? I'm assuming that "no news" means good news in that they're all staying.
Well............ DannyB has a desk right next to those guys so he should know!
Every time I have asked Danny anything about mens bball @ KSU, he has been 100% correct & he lives in Memphis TN, so it must be a virtual desk right next to the coaches. Many people are on this board are "KSU resident experts" about a sport, so what is the big deal if someone answers/posts accurate/correct info?

Thanks for the endorsement. My secret microphone in the coaches offices has not been found for over a decade, so the pipeline of knowledge continues to flow!

I was in Hattiesburg on Monday for work. Maybe I can sneak in those offices before they are occupied.

DannyB.....from your original post on this thread " At some point we have to step up and show our dedication (financially) to our basketball program or we will continue to have sub-par years like the one we just endured. I guess we will see", how should the KSU administration react to the news today about a new arena in Akron? Put up or Shut up?

LOL I don't see the people of Summit County passing this tax. Hey.. they just torn down a decent arena in Richfield. But.... if Jim Tressel becomes Mr. Prez of UA.. I'm sure all his groupie fans will follow whatever he says. hahaha

That's the plan. Hire tressel and sell an arena.

I have mixed feelings about this. Great if they want to build a new arena. Keep in mind this is not The University of Akron building the arena, nor does an off-campus basketball arena move the needle with me. It works for Creighton and here at the University of Memphis, but only the right programs can handle off campus basketball facilities. It may increase local attendance, but I doubt it will do anything for the students at the UA. That said, this news probably doesn't affect us at all. I think we stay the course on our plan to renovate the MAC and build a practice facility. Hopefully these things get done soon.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think the UA occupies the old Polsky Dept. store site right across the street, so I don't believe the arena would be off campus.

I honestly know more about your family than I do the University of Akron, so I may be totally wrong. All that to say I don't know **** about them. Especially if they are talking about right across the street from the University, my first post is completely invalid.

Akron's proposed new arena is to be built on 2 parcels of property in downtown Akron. One is owned by the city and the other by the University (Polsky bldg.). While U of A now houses classes in the Polsky bldg, it is technically separated from the rest of the campus by a few blocks. A lot of students that have class in the Polsky bldg in fact drive to that bldg. Kind of a grey area whether the arena will be considered "on campus" or "off campus." The University certainly has been moving to the west (towards downtown) so at some point it may well be "on campus."

RE: Put up or shut up?
Thanks for the clarification. At any rate, don't look for an arena there anytime soon. Unless Jim Tressel becomes prez of UA and waves the magic wand for all his followers to get in line for this thing, they are dreaming. I'd rather watch a BB game anyday in the MAC Center than sit in Crackron's poor sightline high school gym.
