I think Cuban's broader point is one worth considering. How much is too much? That said, his 10 year timeline is utterly preposterous. This move to Thursdays will effectively kill once and for all Thursday night college football (and all other competition on those nights). The colleges are going to have to move to Fridays to get ratings and that will be a big problem for schools located in states where HS football is a big deal like Texas, California, Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, Georgia, etc.

Ten year just isn't a realistic timeline.

The NFL has 256 games to show over 17 weeks, an average of roughly 15 games per week. One Thursday, one Sunday night, one Monday, and 12 games sandwiched into three windows on Sunday.

The NFL can easily add a week to the season (two open dates so players can heal... it's all about safety) or add other broadcast windows though I think they are prohibitted under the legislation that permitted the AFL-NFL merger from Saturdays and Fridays during the college and high school season and not hit saturation point.

One NBA division has about the same number of games to sell as the NFL.

The NFL should add a week to the season without adding more games, so that every time a team plays on Thursday, they have a bye the previous Sunday. That's such an easy, obvious accommodation for player safety that they ought to have done it already.

And easy enough to accomodate. Open Labor Day weekend.

I imagine you will see just that eventually - an extra bye week incorporated into the regular season. However, I am still a proponent of the 18 game schedule. Four preseason games is too many and fans are not getting enough bang for their buck, IMHO.

I kept hearing how fans did not want to see extra games but I never understood that at all. Why wouldn't you want to see more games that matter instead of practices that don't matter? That makes no sense whatsoever, IMHO.

I feel like I'm in the minority in my opinion on the NFL, but I just don't care about it much anymore. At one point I was a die-hard fan. I lost interest in it because of the high cost to watch the games via NFL Sunday Ticket, the general attitude and sliminess of Roger Goodell, and the seemingly increasing level of "seriousness" of what to me is a beloved game.

In my mind, the NFL should be headed to slaughter. So should college football. It's all just too big/too much and it's all about greed and money. It's just all become a big turn off to me.

Would this be a good place to compare TV ratings? Maybe over-saturation is something the NBA is not qualified to lecture the NFL on?

I think the pelicans vs. Bobcats is on TV right now. Other channel has OKC Thunder vs "memphis" grizzlies. Essential NBA.

Cuban is an egghead and he should stfu.

Folks, when we talk more about whats going on off the field than on, something is amiss. Truly, there is a schism that's going on, that does not bode well for the future of the games IMO.

I also love how the NFL is in bed with all four major broadcast networks (it gets ABC via ESPN), which effectively precludes Monday night college football.

Just like people that complain about too many bowl games. Are you kidding me?

Double bye would just dilute the weekly slate. There is no way you'd consistently have 3 solid prime time games every week when you have a single bye let alone a double bye. But that would be the solution for the short rest I agree. Although it's not really a bye week then, as the players would have to start prep for the Thursday game the Friday or Saturday before. The double bye eventually gets them that one week off, but I wonder what it would do to the quality of the weekly slate.

But if the parity is going to be this strong, then it may be impossible not to have a meaningful match up 80% of the time on TNF. Won't be perfect either way. I would go with a double bye. Eliminate one preseason game, and even though I'd rather not see it, they are going with 7 teams qualifying for the playoffs eventually to make up that lost revenue from the deletion of a preseason game.
