If CFB dismissed SOS, would W/L record eventually indicate the best teams?
Every year this time I see a lot of comparison between CFB and the NCAA tournament.
Some argue that if FBS football had a similar road to a playoff then recruits may not flock to the same teams that they currently do. I think the rationale is that recruits who want to win championships may disperse among different leagues to try and get to the playoff. It's fair to say they assume current powerhouses will still get the best recruits, but some recruits to middle P5 teams may opt for a G5 team.
What are your thoughts?
Personally I think if SOS was truly ignored and the winner of each league advanced, we would see a modest change. Kids would still pick certain schools for academic reasons, family reasons, to play for certain coaches, facilities or to be on tv, but kids would also be more free to pick the school they think they can win a national title at.
I also think that the most powerful recruiting teams would continue to pull major recruits. A difference may be seen in big time recruits that commit to middle-low P5 teams in favor of a G5 team.
So my answer to my own question: No, without SOS W/L wouldn't necessarily indicate the best teams, but I think it would do so more accurately than today's records indicate. I could see it somewhere in the middle of what we have today, and where the NFL is. Honestly, that's not a big change. So instead of the occasional one or two G5 teams that make the top 25, there may be 3 or 4. The teams that typically linger in the 25-40 range would probably see a positive impact.
For anyone who missed the point, I'm not saying this will ever in a million years happen. I'm only interested in your thoughts. There's obviously a lot more to consider than what I put in this.

I agree with you in part. Over time the W/L record would grow more indicative as kids begin to see merit in smaller schools who are at a strong disadvantage in today's system.
However, in the short term we'd have a whole hell of a lot of blowouts.

I don't think there is any evidence to support that idea. The P5 leagues win the recruiting battles in hoops about as often as they win them in football. The difference is there are a few significant difference maker players in basketball and the gap among players #21 to #100 and #101 to #180 is not so great that the P5 have as huge of an advantage.

No. W/L alone would not indicate the best teams.

My alma mater's D3 football team had a better W/L record than 75% of the teams in D1. My nephew's Little League team had a better winning percentage than the New York Yankees. The raw numbers are meaningless without taking into account the competition.

Sos is what the p5 will use to keep g5 schools out of the playoffs.

Using record would work better if they standardized the number of home and away games. Six home, six away for everybody. No more schools playing eight home games, while others only have five. Hard to compare much when you have that happening.

SoS has to be taken into account. One game anything can happen. There is a big step up to play a full season in a P5 conference. Look at how rough the transition has been for Utah in the PAC and TCU and WVU in the B12. Three schools who were consistently very good to great in their old conferences with BCS bowl wins under their belts. Competition matters.
Plus, who wants to see all the cupcakes all the top schools would schedule in the non-conference trying to pad their records. It is bad enough right now with SoS having some influence on things.
