State and UNC have been playing against each other since 1911.

I think it goes back and forth depending on the year. This year I'd say Louisville/Kentucky.

FWIW, UNC vs. Duke if only because it is a conference game and ESPN tells me it is so.

I understand the passion between Louisville fans towards UK, however, it's difficult to label it better than Duke/Carolina due to the following:

Duke/Carolina have played at least twice a year for a VERRRRY long time.

It took an Elite 8 meeting in 1983 for the smarter "heads" in Kentucky to realize the two schools should play every year. However, I'm still sure that if Kentucky Wildcat officials "didn't have to" play Louisville every season, they wouldn't. That likely explains why they hadn't played since 1959.

Y'all check back with me when ESPN or CBS televises Louisville/Kentucky on the same night as either Duke/Carolina matchup so we can have something to compare.

Until then, it's Duke/Carolina > Louisville/Kentucky

why don't you go reread this entire thread and point out where i said that ville/uk is better than unc/duke. otherwise shaddup

I don't know that one is better than the other. Just one bit of perspective. I've seen a lot of you guys cite that we had to have the NCAA step in to get us to play. That, to me actually makes it more special. Because Louisville always wanted to play UK but UK refused to play them. Finally, we played and we won! I don't see that as a reason to discount the rivalry but quite the opposite!

I view the UNC-Duke rivalry as a mostly basketball thing. Both schools have similar types of students and a unspoken mutual respect (along with intense dislike) for one another. The rivalry is steeped in tradition and the fan bases are passionate. Anytime these two teams square off, you feel the history and are acutely aware that something could happen on that court that could permanently add to the storyline of this matchup and become the stuff of legend.

I view the Louisville-UK rivalry as one of pure hatred. Sure, it is mostly over basketball bragging rights in the state of Kentucky. Yet, it also extends to football and to the history of the institutions themselves. If Kentucky football is having a down year (which it usually is), the game is still a hate fest between the two fan bases. The hate is what makes it special and it extends to anything and everything. These schools hate each other over perceived student body and fan base issues. Louisville fans view themselves as the larger city school that has long embraced diversity and they view Kentucky fans as backwater and intolerant. Kentucky fans view themselves as a superior land grant institution and they view Louisville fans with contempt and consider them "urban" and "thuggish" (which isn't true).

If Louisville met UK in any sport, it would make good theater. If they sold tickets to see Louisville play UK in cornhole or ladder ball, it would still probably get rowdy and a fight or two could erupt.

Anyway, go Cards! Take down them wild kitties!!!!!

UConnHusky, what an excellent post for an outsider; you get it.

UNC-Duke play eachother at least two times a year, many times three; that waters it down. But Dickie V and ESPN still want you to think this is the best rivalry.

UofL-UK basketball is a year-round thing; there is a lot of hatred between the fan bases, and also a lot of houses divided where things are more civil.

I haven't experienced the UNC-Duke thing as I have never lived in NC, but have heard from some that lived both, and have said UofL-KY is just different and more intense.

UL-UK is huge.
UNC-Duke is bigger still.

Miami. They have a great coach. I'd rank Larranaga in with the ACC's top coaches next year along with K, Boehiem, Pitino, Dixon, and Bennett. We're getting Buzz Williams at Virginia Tech too, possibly. Has any conference ever had so much coaching talent?

RE: Louisville vs Kentucky > North Carolina vs Duke
What would it have been like if Coach K left Duke after resurrecting the program and winning a couple titles, and then ending up as the head coach a Carolina a few years later? Do you think that would intensify things? That's what the UofL vs. UK rivalry has.

Imagine Coach K at UNC, and then imagine Duke turning over their program to the most hated coach from a historic UNC rival, who has left two previous schools on probation and with vacated seasons. That intensifies things even more, dosen't it? The UofL vs. UK rivalry has that too.

This intensification is on top of the historic distrust of the City of Louisville and the rest of the state. This goes back to the founding of the state. The state motto is "United we stand. Divided we fall". This rivalry reanimates all those divisions and resentments that this exhortation tries to calm.

On top of that there's the institutional rivalry between the universities, like UK opposing UofL's joining the state system in the early 70's, and then failing that, trying to make it a campus for UK, e.g. UK Louisville. Then there's UK's efforts to stymie ongoing UofL engineering and medical school investments in the state legislature, the ongoing Kindred Healthcare battle with UK being a new ally to take over UofL's interest in the Kosair Children's Hospital ion downtown Louisville. And on and on and on.

National attention might be nice for a rivalry, but for the UofL vs. UK one, it's totally irrelevant to the passions. And the Husky is right. If there were a UK vs. UofL tiddlywinks competition. A crowd would show up.

P.S. Here's another take on the basketball part. And another.

Can't imagine that because UNC would not have Duke's coach and vice versa.

Three of the five most watched events in espn history is duke vs unc games. For decades duke vs unc games have had national implications, top 5 match ups, regular season championships, conference titles, number 1 seeds. They started playing football in 1888. And the riverly has not gone down. I don't see any other riverly having such implications as this game.
