RE: Talent isn't eveything
Fans overanalyze. I know. I am one. But games usually turn on a handful of plays. A layup that inexplicably drops through, a 3 that somehow rattles in. A couple of 4 or 5 point turnarounds.

The rest of the time, it's all about imposing your will on the other team.

Of course it helps if you're just really damn good.

I'm ready.

I believe we have more top-rated players in our program than them ... still, talent on paper doesn't win you the games. Just play TIGERS basketball and try to dictate the tempo ... speed that sucker up.

YOU PRESS ALL NIGHT, I DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM DICTATE TEMPO ... YOU MAKE SURE THEY REMEMBER, FOREVER, THE NIGHT THEY PLAYED THE TIGERS!

You really think so. Funny stuff. Keep looking at the recruiting services instead of watching games.

Do you have a reading comprehension problem? I said, "on paper" ... you bolded the one part of my statement so you can chime in and be all cute. Read the entire post and then comment ...

I thought you were going to finish it like the other saying -- talent isn't everything, it's the only thing!

When you have talented and creative players, the more structure you impose, the less freedom you allow, the more you reign in the unpredictable nature of that talent. That very unpredictability makes your team hard to plan for.

That's a two-edged sword, however. For the talent to win out over the team that sticks to its system, talent must also stick to their system, however loosely it might be structured. If we can do that, if we can do what we do best without becoming wild and careless, we may win. If not, we will be spanked. Which will it be?

You cannot really prepare for speed.
Florida prepared for our defense...which was known to get steals and turn that into transition points.
Coach Donovan remarked that even though they had prepared for it...they still couldn't stop it.

I have to disagree with 100% of everything you said. What you are describing is an AAU team, which is exactly what we have been criticized for playing like. I don't care how much talent you have, you need to play smart, under control and structured bball. You'll see this tonight when Virginia beats our Tigers by about 10-12 points. We have more talent IMO, but they have a system.

Bump

You can bump all you want but what I wrote remains 100% valid now as it was when I wrote it. If you don't understand it, that's fine, but I was right then and am right now. They ran their system much better than we ran ours.

Or their system is just better than ours! Heck, after 5 years I'm still not really convinced we even have a consistent offensive "system".
