DENTON, Texas – The University of North Texas has announced a new contract extension for head football coach Dan McCarney that runs through the 2018 season. The new five-year contract extension was signed this morning by McCarney and makes him one of the highest paid coaches in Conference USA. The entire package will be worth 3.625 million dollars over five years.

“I’m extremely appreciative of Rick Villarreal and President Neal Smatresk for their support and loyalty,” said coach McCarney. “Our collective vision is to keep the Mean Green football program rolling, to strive for new heights and to add special chapters to the history books each year. I am so honored each day to lead this program at such a special university and community.”

The five-year deal has a base salary of $600,000, but, with guaranteed incentives, the deal will reach $725,000 per season. With incentives the total package could reach as high as $850,000 per season.

I've talk to the man on a few occasions. He seems very happy in Denton. I hope we can hang onto him until he is ready to retire.

I'll be going to our scrimmage tomorrow morning. It's way too early to know if we are going to be able to adequately fill all the holes left by our seniors that graduated, but I can't wait to see who's ready to step up and make their mark on our program. I'll post a scrimmage wrap-up.
