What timeframe was the focus? 2008? Gimme a break.....

It is. It's focused on Cal's time. They will get into how Pastner has changed it. Known this series was coming for a while. Inside sources. 07-coffee3

My inside source just confirmed that you have no inside source. 03-shhhh

It's a degree.

I remember when most jocks got Phys Ed degrees.

I remain skeptical about all these 3 year degrees for Div I players.

Awesome.

But, was his tennis schedule similar to that of a D 1 basketball player?

No, actually it was 'your bad' for saying "all these 3 year degrees for D1 players."

You mean college athletes possibly took classes that didn't really exist? I'm shocked.

Perhaps you are right.

But then, the assumption would seem overwhelmingly natural considering football and basketball constitute the vast majority of the discussion topics on this board.

And, I repeat with the same sincerity as before. It is indeed awesome what
your former room mate was able to accomplish.

It is unfortunate that you seem to have taken personal offense for an innocuous assumption that we were speaking of football and basketball.

It's unfortunate that you seem to think I've taken 'personal offense.' I never thought it was "awesome" what my friend did and I don't take offense. He's an ordinary guy IMO ... who didn't mess around and knew what he wanted to do at the beginning. Maybe it's maturity. Pastner, a basketball player, who also impresses me as an ordinary guy got his degree in three years. Why can't others do the same without question?

Of course I don't know any more about your friend than what you stated. But, I still think his academic accomplishments were noteworthy and not at all "ordinary."

As to Josh, his energizer bunny life mode along with a remarkable drive has gotten him to a very high level in his profession at a very early age. Quite remarkable but singular in there aren't many like him.

I think most here would agree that Josh is no where near an "ordinary guy"
considering his unique character traits including those mentioned.

Working round the clock with only a few hours of sleep and the extraordinary discipline he exhibits in his every day life are not part of the standard equipment for "ordinary guys" playing D1 basketball.

Others have explained the dynamics that they consider in play for the "new" standard of graduating in 3 years. I respect their explanations,
but remain skeptical. And that's nothing more than simply my own opinion which is expressed without ill will.

I'm offended by the underlying message in the sushi comic that appears several times in this thread. The creator has an ax to grind, yet appears smart enough to disguise his true agenda in the background rather than risk losing his job by making some overt pitch.

Anyway, I'm sure everyone on the board knows that I'm talking about. Advancing that kind of misinformation probably suits some readers just fine, and has no effect on many others who either ignore it or let it roll off their back. Maybe I need to adopt the same response rather than getting all worked up over something that may only offend a small minority.

I do have to vent my frustrations, and will to take this opportunity to try and set the record straight. Despite what you see portrayed in movies, TV shows, and other media, not all Asian men wear housecoats around the house. My knowledge is based on frequent social contact with members of my large circle of Eastern social contacts. These transplanted Occidentals doggedly pursue full assimilation into Western culture, by quickly adopting a broad spectrum of good old Western habits. Why, I'd wager that at least half of my Eastern friends wear everything from loose fitting Martial Arts attire, to high-end designer sportswear, and anything in between when at home. Yes, some Asian Americans elect to don a traditional brightly colored kimono, or flowing Yukata or Kosode, but a growing majority have branched out to include popularly branded golf attire, designer sports wear, or even traditional Dockers tastefully paired with a matching knit shirt and a suitable cardigan sweater.

So the take home message is, don't believe that you see - not all Asian Americans live in embroidered silk robes and pajamas at home. The comic reinforces a common, but erroneous stereotype that Asians typically wear silk robes and kimonos at home, ad this prompted a need to spread the truth through this reeducation period. Hopefully, out message will undo the ideas advanced in the comic.

Great Caesar's ghost! I agree completely!

Commenting on comics, your comic, Bill, reminds me of my elderly uncle who, when introduced to his room at the assisted living complex, complained that it was not as nice as his former condo. The Residential Coordinator said, "There is Good and there is Better, and you, Mr. Jones, have Better!" My uncle gave her a steely look and said, "Well, where is Best?"

"who also impresses me as an ordinary guy got his degree in three years. Why can't others do the same without question?"

The answer is simple. After twelve years of forced education with summers off for no good reason, people don't understand how to work. Time is not something to be wasted. I would encourage anyone still pursing an education to go summer school. Its a good away to get you required education out of the way before the rest of the people finish classes and get out into the work world. That is when your real education starts.
