It can definitely be overcome, but Greenville is almost twice the size of Hattiesburg, ECU is closer to a major city (~1 hour to Raleigh), and ECU has 28,000 students to USM's 15,000.

I don't know if most USM graduates stay in Mississippi or leave, but there is considerably more economic opportunity for ECU graduates in NC and thus more potential donors with money.

USM is in a small town in the poorest state in the country, so it's not a completely apples to apples comparison.

Marshall is probably a better comparison.

Were you out sick all of the other 5,000 times we had this fukking argument/discussion/pigfuck?

Save the rest of us some exasperation and do a ******* forum search for "pointless gaddam conversations". It's just retarded that, even at this late date, someone who somehow missed the boat the other thousands of times this subject has blown up wants to throw gas on the gaddam fire ONE MORE TIME because they want to blow it up "their way".

Everything, and I mean every conceivable thing that could be said upon the subject, HAS been said on the subject.

RE: Southern Miss has no market???!!!
ECU only got a football invite for the 50,000 people they pack in their stadium and their solid tv ratings in all of NC's major cities. They didn't get a full sport invite until 9 more schools left.

Both schools are irrelevant in the city. NOLA is Saints, LSU. At least we have a visual prevalence in the city. Saying NOLA cares about USM more than Tulane is hogwash. Our news doesn't mention you. Our news sites and papers don't mention you. I rarely see USM gear/the occasional bumper sticker.

Puhhhhhlease. When your only grab at a market is a 2 hour drive, you have none.

We don't have a piece of New Orleans now because we suck and because you kicked us out of your conference. There was a time when USM was arguably the #2 team on the Northshore, behind LSU. The same could be said about St. Bernard. And Tulane "home" games againt us were de fact USM home games from about 1990-2010. I'm talking >90% USM fans in the stands, including 1998.

All of this ended the minute Tulane decided to press the gas pedal down 20% instead of just 10%.

Regardless, USM contributes far more to the welfare of the people of New Orleans than Tulane does, and this has been true for decades.

TUlane is the largest employer in the city and it's students donate over 500,000 hours of community service every year, this year 750,000. My graduating year it was 1,000,000 (Katrina relief). So that sentence is not only wrong, it's offensively wrong.

And I'm proud of your fans for having cars. Glad you can make the 2 hour drive to support your school at AWAY games. Because that's what a 2 hour drive is. AWAY.

I have a question for you. I've been to about 20 Tulane football games in my life, over 30 years or so. I've never been to one where Tulane fans outnumbered the away team's fans. I've never been to one where it was even a close call. So, since basically no one cares about Tulane sports, but you apparently do care, does that not make you by definition a weirdo / eccentric / crank? I'm not passing judgment, just wondering. Does this weirdness manifest itself in other areas of your life? Like, do you count in base 9 and communicate in some strange, unknown language? Do you have the same five senses as ordinary humans? Are you sexually attracted to vending machines? Just curious...

So have passion for your school's athletic team, even though they aren't productive on the field makes one a weirdo?! Are you F*cking kidding me?

I think the most dedicated fans come from the schools without a lot of success. It is easy to be a fan of Alabama's and the like.

You lost the argument, don't make yourself look like the weirdo.

Hattiesburg has a Cheddar's. Who gives a damn about McDonald's?

We have a Cheddar's 20 minutes down the road in West Monroe. It's awful though. Who would brag about having one?

Who would brag about having a McDonalds (or 2)?

Take the stick out of your @%$. He was joking.

USM was never the number 2 team on the northshore or anywhere in Louisiana (nor 3, nor 4 nor 5) (you may have been #2 in recruiting over there in some years) and that's completely and utterly false re 1998 (or any other pre-Katrina Year) - a pure an utter lie.
Don't blame us because you went broke after 1 losing season. That's what got you.

I don't know who the number 2 team on the northshore is (it really doesn't matter either because they're 95% LSU), but it isn't USM or Tulane. Though a whole bunch of people from there do attend USM.

I'd say it's ULL now. Though I was in a bar there recently and it had a bunch of Tulane stuff. Shrug

Even the MS Coast is a LSU/USM/Alabama/MSU split. SEC has got the bandwagon fans.....it is what it is.

An article in the Times-Picayune last May listed USM as the 2nd most popular college destination for graduating seniors in St Tammany Parish behind LSU - I believe this is what the poster was referencing. As a St Tammany resident I can attest to a good number of USM stickers on cars, etc., on the roads, however it doesn't compare to the number of LSU/BAMA/UT/UA/pick your SEC school stickers.

Didn't know that, that's interesting. I'm surprised there aren't more Southeastern students. I guess too close to home.

I was a bit surprised as well. Southeastern was 3rd, can't remember beyond that, sorry.

I didn't know that... we've all pretty much stopped reading the Sometimes Picayune down here, since, you know, they stopped actually printing the paper everyday.

I agree that it's a pretty trivial thing to be #2 anywhere in this state. More than anything, it's relevant to USM internally that we've lost a real foothold we once had in NOLA. It's particularly relevant that the two schools that passed us up (ULL and Tulane) didn't really inspire much fear in our fans until they'd already passed us. "Complacency" is the word that pops to mind. The aggressivetthing to do would have been to attack the New Orleans market, which is pathetically underserved when it comes to higher education.
