u of m presidential candidate interviews
I'm sure everyone is aware of our university is currently searching for a new president but if you're curious to know more about the candidates, you can access the link here:

http://www.memphis.edu/pressearch/

The selection of a new president is an important milestone for our University including athletics. Videos are also posted for each faculty, student, and staff sessions.

They all look like excellent choices, but Tiger football fans should be especially enthused over Guy Bailey, former president of two "power conference" football schools (Texas Tech and Alabama), plus has VERY important Big 12 connections, plus is already familar with UofM (having previously been on ouir faculty).

I cringe when I see a candidate from an SEC school. Out last one just about killed our football program.

Sadly, I'm sure the fix is in for Rudd......but Bailey certainly has the most impressive resume.

They'll hire whichever one hates big-time college athletics the most.

that would likely be george hynd...college of charleston. he made a lot of comments about making sure that "student" is paramount in "student athlete," not much else about athletics overall. struck me as very shirley raines-ish.

Should not be a factor. The athletic program is Bowen's job. President is hired to run what the University was set up to do. Education and research..

The two are directly related though. Athletic success tends to be highly correlated to more applicants and better applicants for a University.

we already have coaches that do that. hopefully they'll make the right hire.

I like the Bailey guy as well, a former English prof, like me, and apparently a fan of athletics.

Nice looking resume and the credentials sure would help at this time. This is why we will not hire him if previous committees are any indication.

Yeah, I don't think the fix is in just because he's already at Memphis. Frequently in academia, which is a surprisingly backstabbling sort of place, if folks have been in one place awhile, they've made enemies, stepped on toes, etc, which rules them out for moving on up.

Not saying that's the case here at all, just saying I doubt if the fix is in.

Maybe, maybe not. But when it comes to qualification for President of the University. What he thinks about athletics should not be a part of the evaluation equation. The school has already hired someone to focus on that part. Prefer someone who will spend their time working on improving the academic situation at the university and increase the research opportunities at the university. In the long run our university reputation and endowment will grow faster and larger if we improve the academic standing of the university than it will we we just pump out loads of pro players.

It's not a "fix" ... it's a good choice and he'll get the post. The existing interim president likes him along with many others within the alumni association.

Stay tuned. You'll see a good one installed and we'll take off on a good route to excellence in financial matters, athletic growth and quality education for all diligent students.

That is an impressive list of applicants. I don't see how you turn down someone with Guy Bailey's experience who has been a part of the school in the past. That's the kind of applicant that may turn us down.

RE: u of m presidential candidate interviews
I still think Sharon Gaber is obviously a strong candidate. She understands urban development, athletics, and well-rounded leadership.

Guy Bailey also has a lot to offer. However, Memphis isn't Austin or Tuscaloosa.

It seems odd to me to promote Rudd when he's only been around since 2013.
