Guy Bailey also has a lot to offer. However, Memphis isn't Austin or Tuscaloosa.

It seems odd to me to promote Rudd when he's only been around since 2013.

That's interesting. Sharon Gaber's urban development experience is exactly why I don't like her as a candidate. I want someone who will focus on the school. I think she would lose focus trying to expand out into community development.

Agree with your point. Memphis may be an "urban school" but it ain't no "city school" any more than, say, Louisville.

I might feel differently if I thought the city was capable of embracing the university as a driver of change. I don't think that can happen in the current political environment.

Bailey looks good, & at this point I do trust Brad to make a solid recommendation, the main decision makers have done a great job lately IMO (some other decent options also)

Something that stands out after listening to Guy Bailey....the man seems like someone could go all over Tennessee and get more money and more students.

During his time at Texas Tech, he oversaw a huge increase in state and external funding.

I also found it interesting that when student morale got low at Texas Tech football games, he and his wife started sitting in the student section.

Hynd (University of Charleston) actually said that athletics was a great tool to promote the University and that having been a University of Georgia faculty member for many years that he was an especially big football fan. To me, he was the most articulate of the group in answering questions and in projecting his vision for the University. For some reason, they did not have sessions with the prospect from The University of Arkansas posted. I would have liked to have heard her comments too.

Frankly, I think any of the four would make an excellent president for our university. I am very pleased with the choices.

Should not be a factor. The athletic program is Bowen's job. President is hired to run what the University was set up to do. Education and research..

The two are directly related though. Athletic success tends to be highly correlated to more applicants and better applicants for a University.

Maybe, maybe not. But when it comes to qualification for President of the University. What he thinks about athletics should not be a part of the evaluation equation. The school has already hired someone to focus on that part. Prefer someone who will spend their time working on improving the academic situation at the university and increase the research opportunities at the university. In the long run our university reputation and endowment will grow faster and larger if we improve the academic standing of the university than it will we we just pump out loads of pro players.

I absolutely agree that I want a President who sees this as their main focus. However, I find it dangerous to hire someone who sees no value or importance of a strong athletic department as well. Fortunately, it seems as though all of the candidates have some sort of balance in this regard.

Guy Bailey's staff session will be available in about an hour and a half.

The session from this morning has been posted. Direct link is below. If you fast forward to the 15min mark, one of the questions that was asked was about athletics.

Why would you say the fix is in?
Why would it be sadly?
Why is bailey's resume the most impressive?

Because Rudd was brought in only last year, and has the least experience...he's been the provost for not even a full year, and prior to that the highest position he has held has been dean.

I say sadly because the TBoR is going to pick someone who serves THEIR political agendas first & foremost...that would be whoever Brad Martin's guy has been, since Martin is so politically connected.

I think Bailey's resume is the most impressive because he:

1. Is a former U of M English professor - so he's at least familiar with the university & how the TBoR works.

2. Has held the position of President at both Texas Tech AND Alabama. He knows how to handle huge budgets and balancing athletics/academics.

3. He was a part of the Big XII selection committee, and has served on NCAA committees.....that's huge for reasons I don't need to explain.

4. He is big on the relationship the university has with the neighborhoods & city it's in. He suggested a neighborhood council (if there isn't one already) that would regularly sit down with him.

5. He wants an open door policy, so any parent, student, staff or faculty member can come in & talk to him about any concerns they have.

It's not a "fix" ... it's a good choice and he'll get the post. The existing interim president likes him along with many others within the alumni association.

Stay tuned. You'll see a good one installed and we'll take off on a good route to excellence in financial matters, athletic growth and quality education for all diligent students.

It IS the fix if he gets the job. He may do a perfectly fine job; but there are way more qualified candidates on the table.

He struck me as someone who could pull that off. He didn't speak against the TBOR today, but I could see him doing so if he got the job.

Hynd was the most well-spoken out of all of them, I thought, but he just seemed like the worst out of the 3 so far...I'm very interested to hear Sharon Gaber next week.
