Yes, he said this in an interview this week as well. He went further and said something to the effect of he would have bet his entire salary we wouldn't have played that way against UCONN because we had two great practices the days before and the guys were excited and looking forward to a re-match. He said Geron apologized to him on the way off the court of the UCONN game and Geron said they were all in an inexplicable "fog" out on the court. He said he asked them how in the world can they be in a fog in that game on their home floor and they all just said they had absolutely no answer or any idea why. His only explanation is they are just 19-23 year olds. Say what you will about it's the coach's fault for not having them focused, etc., but when the players are apologizing to him for their lack of focus that sounds to me like it's the mental makeup of the individuals themselves. You either have it or your don't.
I think Pastner's emphasis on nailing the threes as a key requirement to winning the game is taken out of context by most of those that don't like hearing it. Part of that is Pastner's inability to really communicate the message of what he is saying. If you would hear him out instead of immediately shutting him off, he usually goes on to explain that for this particular team, this group of players, their defense feeds off their offense, not vice versa. When they are not hitting shots it gets in their head and they tend to slack off on defense instead of doing the opposite. And when they are hitting shots their defense feeds off of it and they crank up the intensity and lock down on D. So when they aren't hitting shots it impacts their effort and discipline on both sides of the ball, thus the outcome of the game. You can speculate until you are blue in the face whose fault that is, but that is the message he is attempting to communicate.
Great post.
I think he would add that collectively as a team once we start missing open shots, we start forcing up bad shots. I've seen him ask more than one player "what was that?" after a horrible shot. Bad shots lead to rebounds and fast breaks for the other team because the rest of our guys are not in position yet.
Thanks guys

yes, we seem to forget D and force shots when the other team goes on a run. This is due to mental breakdown and specifically I think the forced shots when down are due to certain players reverting back to HS superstar habits and trying to take the entire comeback on their shoulders rather than trusting the system, passing, and making smart shots with open looks.

some of you folks are just blind if you don't believe this team has not struggled this season. yes, they have some good wins, and when you have a collection of talent, that's going to happen. but this team has looked out of whack for much of the season.

Here we go again with this crap. Look, we won against UL twice but got swept by UConn and Cincy. We had our moments both ways this year. Now lets concentrate on the clean slate we now have and the game in front of us.

That is it along with confidence. No real alpha male leader out there. It causes inconsistency. And weakens confidence

To the above who noted that Pastner mentioning making threes is taken out of context...
EXACTLY.
Unless every time in every interview he needs to give the entire lengthy game planning about doing this and then doing that which we need to for in order to create open shots...then need to make them.
It pre considers everything else.

I listened to him this morning too. He also said he was trying to get out of the business of "expectations." Not sure I understand that coming from a coach.

how about explaining the root cuase of the matador defense against Cincy I & II, @SMU, & UCONN I & III and the corrective action.
this "fog", i'm beginning to wonder if it is related to "puff, puff, pass".

Some of you also really need to develop a sense of humor.
Disagree. 'Huge' a Tiger fans don't sit around in their parents basement waiting for every chance they can to bash on a TIGER coach. Many times making stuff up or better yet lying like cheap carpet to do so

Cincy did not play great D. They left the 3-ball open and couldn't clog-up the inside and beat harvard with their physical play. Like they did to us. Twice.
