RE: Official Game Thread: CIT Round 2 vs Towson
They play six (6) guys (4 of them Seniors) with 26 minutes or more. 1 guy gets 11 with little production. Nobody else is likely to get more than 3 or 4 minutes.
6’8” 245 NBA prospect Jerrelle Benimon is everything to them. He leads them in everything: minutes played (38) scoring (20.1 in conference), rebounds (12.6), assists (3.4), blocks (1.2). Like Z. Mason, he can hit from 3 (.341) and likes to try 1 or 2 a game. At 6’8”, he’s got a couple of inches on 6’6” Z. Mason.
FRONT COURT: 6’8” 245 Sr. Jerrelle Benimon (38 min., 12.6 rpg, 20.1 ppg); 6’7” 210 Sr. Marcus Damas (33.3 min., 5.6 rpg, 11.1 ppg, 42-117 .359 from 3); 6’7” 215 So. Timajh Parker-Rivera (27.2 min., 7.6 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 0 three’s, 1.1 blocks)
BACK COURT: 6’3” 210 Sr. Rafriel Guthrie (26.5 min., 12.9 ppg, 31-80 .388 from 3; 2.9 rpg); 6’5” 205 Sr. Mike Burwell (30.9 min., 4.1 rpg, 2.4 assists); 6’2” 180 So. Four McGlynn (25.1 min., 7.1 ppg, 61-156 .391 from 3, 1.5 rpg)
BENCH: 6’8” 230 Fr. Walter Foster (11.3 min., 0.9 ppg, 2.1 rpg)
They make 6 three’s per game on .356 shooting. But they defend the 3 extremely well – holding opponents to .310 and 5.7 makes per game. By comparison, the Bucs make 7.8 per game on .363 shooting, but don’t defend as well, allowing 7.5 per game on .328 to opponents.
They shoot free throws almost as well as we do (.728 to .750) and get to the line more (28.0 attempts per game to 25.3).
Rebounding is in their favor, as you would expect with the size advantage – Bucs -3.1; Towson +3.8
Bucs should have a ballhandling and quickness edge. Towson doesn’t turn it over much, with 9.2 turnovers in conference, but they force only 7.6 for opponents. Turnover margin is thus +1.6 compared to a superior -1.9 for the Bucs. Towson also has fewer assists than t.o.’s (-1.1 compared to +0.4 for the Bucs). The Bucs have an edge in steals, 7.8 to 4.0.
This could look a lot like Chattanooga: size versus quickness. A powerful, versatile big man in the middle, and an overall size advantage. But perhaps there's a quickness edge to the Bucs in the other positions – think Jalen, Petey and others blowing by bigger guys. Their ability to defend the 3 may make it even more important that the Bucs be able to drive. As usual KGG will present a matchup problem for the opponent. Towson matched up reasonably well with USCU’s big front line. ETSU’s quick guards will present a different challenge. It will be critical that we get another superior effort from Hunter, backed up by another solid performance from Lukas, and perhaps a few minutes from Banks.
They are 23-10 and 7-7 on the road. They lost on the road to Stephen F. Austin 69-79; but beat 9-22 Temple, albeit in a down year, and at home in Maryland. They are one of only 3 teams to beat USCU at home (along with FGCU and UNC Asheville) on a half court buzzer beater that prevented overtime. These guys will be tougher than Chattanooga, but beatable if we play our "A' game (Stephen F. Austin, Valpo, Marshall, FGCU).
Unfortunately, I’m committed to a gig in NC and won’t be able to see this one. Go Bucs!
