This is the problem with statistics. You can arbitrarily hone in on any one to wrap up in propaganda; while ignoring the countless others that contradict your conclusion.
There are no "countless others" stats that support SMU. There are some, but there are also others that undermine SMU - most have to do with the schedule, which was abjectly soft - and the road record, which was almost empty of quality wins.
With the exception of the road win at UConn, we can summarize SMU's season by saying "they played a lot of mediocre to bad teams, and did a damn fine job of beating most of them, especially at home".
But beating bad teams at home is not the most solid basis for building an NCAA resume.
And yet despite that, there is little question that had they just beat an awful Houston team on a neutral court in the AAC tourney, they get in. That's the equivalent of just having to have your best free throw shooter make one free throw to win a game, and he blows it.
SMU blew it.

Find me 1, just 1 team with an equally impressive resume.
By tournament worthiness standards, SMU's resume wasn't impressive. Neither was NC State's or Xavier's. No bubble team's resume is.
You could make a case for any of those three - or Tennessee or Iowa - as most deserving of being "first left out", or vice-versa. Each has major flaws, it all depends on what you choose to emphasize.
I think what tipped it against SMU was losing three straight and having the worst final loss. The loss to Houston was their last impression, and it was the worst last impression.. That hurt their eyeball test worse than anyone else's, and was the difference, given that on paper, all had roughly the same quantitative value.
They beat Houston, and no question they make the field.
What we really see is a flaw in the way the teams are selected. Too much X and Y statistics and not enough "well... do we think this team would be that team if they played on a neutral court?" The tournament standards are in need of reworking. Too much focus on overall SOS and not enough on winning those games.
So if NC State went 3-9 vs top 50 RPI and SMU goes 4-6, then chop off enough losses to make the # of games equal and it's still 3-7. Takes into account that NC States schedule was more difficult, but also rewards SMU on their wins.
That's definitely not perfect, but I don't get paid to do this stuff. I just think SMU could handle State on a neutral court.

Are you counting all the games played in Garland while Moody was being renovated as home games? Crowds of 50 - 300.
