Is that actually still in question if he can hack it? Guy is as mediocre as mediocre gets. But it looks like this Neal guy hasn't proven a damn thing either.

Neal is 27-6 with New Mexico this year and he won the Mountain West.

He was part of Cremins' early years at GT. Coming through GT he knows the challenges and how to succeed far better than most.

He's been a head coach one year and he took over a good program that was already winning from the previous coach. If they're still that good in 3 years then you can credit it to him.

I understand exactly what you are saying and yes, I agree. Neal would more than likely be the best fit for Ga Tech.

@ Marge Schott, what does him being a first year head coach have anything to do with anything. Yes, New Mexico have a good program; however, just because the cupboard is stock doesn't mean a coach can succeed with what he is given. Reference Coach Doh and what was left for him at UNC after Coach Gut retired. So, I would change that to say can he recruit. I am sure as an assistant coach, he had some recruiting and maybe, just maybe some of those players are the ones he help get.

I could have been with you until that part about Doherty. Guthridge left the cupboard pretty bare for his successor. Gut knew he would only be there for three years (the length of time needed to maximize his pension benefits), and didn't put much effort into recruiting. Maybe he thought that at UNC the players would just come to him.

While Doherty mishandled the players he got, he at least left Williams with enough talent to win a NC.
