Three of the top three-point shooters in Tigers history, a JUCO all american recruit, a versatile 6'9 sophomore who was a top 35 recruit, a healthy Garcia (was healthy in April 09 didn't hurt his knee until the fall), Pierre Niles. Oh, and then an open spot to allow Elliot Williams to transfer in immediately.
Yeah, real ground zero.
Such a weak and really untrue argument.
Don't even bother. People here act like we were left with Christian Bros. When Cal left. We were left with a semi-decent team in year one and played semi-decent. The only year Josh didn't underachieve.

Pastner is in his fourth straight NCAA Tournament, and he's coaching a team with a perfect APR score and zero off-the-court issues through five years, which is frankly amazing given the history of the Memphis program. Because of all that, his bosses love him, and rightfully so. But Memphis fans can be a hard bunch to please in the post-Calipari era, and that's why Pastner had better not lose to George Washington in the Round of 64.
Will he be fired? Of course not. But that won't stop some Memphis fans from screaming that he should. A loss to GW on Friday or a loss to (presumably) Virginia on Sunday, and the following will be true: Pastner will have had four straight preseason top-20 teams that failed to advance past the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament. That, by definition, is an annual underachievment even if the big picture remains mostly positive.
Whether this is fair or not, a rational discussion of its relative merits on this board is impossible because of the bolded part.
That's just not true.
There are MAYBE two or three posters that want JP fired...CUSA NEWS and maybe a one or two others.
No rational person believes that JP should be fired.
The problem is people like you and others inject that sentiment into posts and then argue off that premise.
I think it would be foolish to fire Pastner...so foolish that it isn't even a real point of discussion. However, I do disagree with some things he does as coach. Disagreeing and wanting him fired are NOT the same thing.
But...there are posters on here that will take a statement that may be critical of Pastner's in game strategy and twist it into a "well I guess we should just fire him" bs post. Then others pile on about the "idiots" that want him gone and who Memphis would hire if they got rid of a coach that has the record JP has...(even though NO ONE even mentioned firing him).
So that's how it works.
Excellent post!

Sallie was great. The other two you speak of(Sallie and Kemp) were career 35% 3-point shooters. Solid I guess, but not even in the Top 10 all-time for Memphis in 3pt shooting percentage.

That five-year streak when we won nine tournament games?
Different tournament then.
That five year streak included:
Sweet 16- lost to Villanova
Sweet 16- lost to Phi Slamma Jamma
Sweet 16- lost to Phi Slamma Jamma
Final Four- lost to VIllanova
Second Round- lost at LSU
Memphis was a 2 seed in 1982 and a 4 seed in 1983- which meant they started the tourney in the round of 32- and only had to win one game to advance to the Sweet 16. It is overwhelmingly likely they would have won a first round game against a 15 or 13 seed- though certainly not guaranteed.
So- it would have been 11 tourney wins if the present format- which means- and it actually was -AVERAGING slightly better than a Sweet 16.
Nice try. But it was THAT 5 year run under Kirk that completely turned the city over to Memphis Tigers college basketball-after the symbolic and important run in 1973.
