Bruce Pearl to Auburn!
Wow... great hire for Auburn. Tennessee better make the Sweet 16 this year, or there will be trouble in the Smokies.

RE: Bruce Pearl to Auburn!
Congrats to Auburn!

Must be nice to have an AD that actually CARES about men's basketball.

Meanwhile, ours decides to buy our way into the chitty CBI tournament to justify giving our loser incompetent coach a 4th year and an extension because he doesn't want the hassle of a coaching search.

RE: Bruce Pearl to Auburn!
It's kinda like the Geico Pyramid commercial, "Uh Oh." It could be a mistake that turns out great and he could build something that will last. But my fears is that he has one great turn around season in his third year and bolts. Also everyone thinks Auburn football landed the school in probation and in 60 years that has happened in a major way maybe 3 times. Basketball coaches have done it to us as often in half the time. Can Pearl stay clean is the question. I know he can recruit. I know he can win. And the program was in poor enough shape that it may be worth the risk. Part of me is glad we finally hired a good coach. Part of me says "Uh Oh."

I have gotten to listen to Pearl about once a week during basketball season the last couple of years because he guests on our sports radio, and I do think he is contrite and learned his lesson. The hosts continuously bash the NCAA for how hard they came down on Pearl compared to other coaches/programs with much worse crimes, but Pearl never joins in or even gives a little chuckle about it. He will be overly cautious, especially early on.

Auburn basketball is in tough enough shape that this was a must-move hire. Pearl is different than Petrino; Petrino has a track record of being a scumbag. Pearl made a silly recruiting mistake and then made a majorly stupid mistake by thinking it was a small enough deal to lie about some details, thinking it would go away. As has been mentioned over and over, it was Pearl lying (or not fully disclosing) the details that got him in so much trouble, not the hot dog grilling itself.

JR, I think if any SEC school lost their coach within the last 2 weeks and no other high level coaches would become available (which doesn't appear to be the case this year), Bruce Pearl would be the first choice among their AD and fans. I include Kentucky in that list. Pearl may have backlash from the presidents/chancellors at some schools, namely Tennessee, but those guys are hard to predict.

My feelings

Pearl got a raw deal from the NCAA...smart hire imo. It's annoying when good coaches have to wait in the wings while other schools are hire inferior coaches. He could've taken a Indiana, nc state, ucla, Houston, etc. Back to competing for national titles.

RE: Bruce Pearl to Auburn!
The well is not dry in Alabama... Kentucky took both DeMarcus Cousins and Eric Bledsoe out of the state during Calipari's first year. This year, the state has 4 guys who are 4 star players and several three stars. Basketball is not like football... if Pearl could just land 2 or 3 of those 4 star guys per year and then recruit nationally to fill in missing pieces, they would be legit. As it is, Alabama is getting the top players in state, and UAB is getting the leftovers. Heck, Purdue took a 4 star player out of the state this year. Once Pearl can start recruiting (August 23rd), they will be well on their way.

The 2016 class is where he needs to concentrate because most of the 2015 guys already have strong relationships with top programs. In 2016, there is a kid out of Madison named Josh Langford that is a 5 star combo guard. He is not a lean anywhere yet and has both Alabama and Auburn on his list. That would be my first call once Bruce is legally able.

I love this hire. Hiring great coaches is how the SEC moves toward becoming a solid basketball conference.

Wouldn't surprise me to see him pick up some good kids out of state. Pearl is a popular guy, the kids know who he is. They see him talking and analyzing on ESPN when they watch basketball game. Auburn is a pretty desirable school with a nice arena. I'm betting he lands some big talent.

I was saddened to see Tenn fire him and hoped we would get him back after his probation. I think it will turn out great for Auburn if they have a 'compliance' guy shadow him.

The NCAA guy that performed the investigation on Pearl is now on staff at Auburn. I think everyone will behave.

Low risk / high reward type of thing. Auburn has been a decade without an NCAA appearance, and besides a stretch in the 80s and 1999-2003 has not been a good program. If Pearl is the same coach he was a Tennessee, but without the NCAA trouble, then Auburn got a game changer. If he fails, but without NCAA trouble then nothing lost. The only risk is if he gets in trouble with the NCAA and I doubt that happens this time around.
