USF/Houston: likely Bruce Pearl to Auburn..
From CBS Sports:

Latest in hoops: NCAA Tournament | Expert Brackets | Coaching Changes

The opening at Auburn is Bruce Pearl's "if he wants it," a source close to the SEC basketball program told CBSSports.com on Tuesday morning.

Whether Pearl will take the job remains unclear.

Pearl has declined public comment to CBSSports.com.

Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs met with Pearl in Knoxville on Monday, ESPN.com reported. Jacobs fired Tony Barbee after the Tigers' lost in the SEC Tournament. A source told CBSSports.com that Auburn might be willing to pay around $2 million per year for Pearl.

Winning at Auburn will prove much more difficult than winning at Tennessee.

If true (which is certainly debatable) that's saying a whole lot since it's far, far from 'easy' at Tennessee.

Pearl has a show-cause penalty that doesn't expire till August 23, 2014.

Meanwhile, Auburn still needs to recruit/sign players for the April signing period.

Will be interesting to see if Auburn has to hire one of Pearl's top choices for Assoc head coach first (to help with recruiting) and/or if the NCAA will allow Pearl to do anything (officially) for Auburn prior to the end of his show-cause period. (Believe Auburn can appeal to a NCAA Committee if they want to hire Pearl prior to Aug 23, 2014).

If they can make this happen Pearl will make Auburn basketball relevant. Pearl is everything you want in a college basketball coach. A recruiter, a motivator, a floor coach, and a PR guy. He's that good.

If 2 million is the cost I can pretty much say Houston is out. I would be shocked if we went that high. We pay Dickey 400K a year and we paid Penders 700K a year. Knowing our tendencies, I'd be impressed if we cracked open our piggy bank and paid more than 1 million a year. Two million a year is not going to happen. Hell, at this point Im starting to wonder if we are even going to have an opening.

Sounds like it's done. Pearl is Auburn's head coach. Glad to have him out of the state of Tennessee but still too close to Memphis for my taste. Now sit back, relax, and watch Auburn basketball take off these next few years.

A cheating school hires a cheating coach. The NCAA should just open up a satellite office at Auburn, because some cheating is going to be going down. After Cliff Ellis you would think Auburn would avoid this type of issue.

If we are talking national championship contender relevant, it depends on how dirty he wants to get his hands. Cliff Ellis dirty he could probably be in the mix, but I don't think with his history he can afford to misstep with the eyes that will be on him now.

I still think he can be successful there. Lebo won 24 games there the year before he was fired after bringing them back while on probation. That was the 2nd most in school history and he did it clean. Pearl with his higher profile could probably maintain at least a level close to that most every year.

I'd worry more about him coming back as hungry. Seems like when coaches take years off and become announcers they don't comeback the same.

I always thought Tennessee made a huge mistake by letting go of Pearl. They should have promoted Pearl's top assistant as interim coach until Pearl was eligible to come back and retake the reigns. It would have showed good faith and support in the Pearl-Tennessee relationship.

Tennessee is ultimately going to pay the price because IMO Auburn now has one of the top 2 coaches in the SEC (the other being Florida's Donovan).

THANK GOD he didn't go to USF or HOU...

It would make the UCF basketball gap that much bigger between the 2 already mentioned....

I mean SMU is here to stay with Larry Brown...Could only wonder what Pearl would have done with these programs.

That was mostly just the Board Trolls who are allowed to troll the Memphis board. If not that it would have been something else.

Don't forget wire tapper and snitch. Because the punk snitched on Illinois when Iowa and Illinois were recruiting Deon Thomas back in 1988. That should have been a sign right there as to what type of guy Pearl is.

Being honest, I'd rather Pearl than most of the coaches in the AAC..besides his allegations (we all get em...well at least UCF did)

I think that's a bit harsh looking at the facts. True, he cheated and then lied about it --- but the cheating, while breaking the 'rules' was far from serious and the subsequent 'lie' was mostly just being dumb all considered. Auburn just hit a homerun IMO --- and the fans of any school that either didn't or couldn't dole out the cash to hire him appear more butthurt than anything else -

Well the reference was to the post --- not 'the true.' And the facts were that Pearl had a junior over to his house for a BBQ (THEN a violation of NCAA rules). If he would have simply told the truth it would have been a minor violation --- and the end of the story.

No it's not...he then lied to the NCAA, and got his asst coaches to also lie...he was fired after being caught...end of story.

The Bruce jock sniffers don't like that part of the story.
