Baseball America article -- Three Strikes -- Rice
Strike Two: Rice Remains Class of CUSA

Quote:Rice’s offense has also come into its own during the last two weeks. Catcher John Clay Reeves is one of the hottest hitters in college baseball. He went 17-for-25 (.680) in five games last week, raising his season average to .416. Graham also lets him call all the pitches, so he deserves plenty of credit for the success of the pitching staff. No other junior-college transfer in the country has made more of an impact.

Thanks for sharing, Guy-- and a belated Happy Birthday! I encourage everyone to read the entire Baseball America article (the Strike 2 part on the Owls), as The OG talks about team chemistry, the emergence of Byrd and Stainback and how both Fox and McDowell have stepped up on the mound. And thanks to Aaron Fitt for giving us our first national exposure of the year (as both Stitchhead and Kendall continue to keep us somewhat below the radar).

For those who were there or listened, did Coach say anything enlightening during his first radio show last evening? Any word on the status of Evan Rutter?

RE: Baseball America article -- Three Strikes -- Rice
I heard the last segment with Wayne on the radio. He didn't cover the topics you asked about.

He spoke about the need for more offense in college ball and how the lack of it, due to the equipment, would negatively affect recruiting the best players to college. He suggested that the new ball next year will help, but that college baseball should adopt the international ball (?). He said that ball was made by Mizuno (?) and was used by Stanford in their warmup batting practice. The ball is similar to the major league ball and really flew out of the park (Sunken Diamond).

He also stated that Florida State may be the best team today, but that they would always have trouble in Omaha because their field is a small ballpark. When they get to Omaha, they have trouble duplicating the same kind of offense they show during the season.

Thanks for the BD greeting, Walt.

I'm surprised to hear of any team, much less Stanford, warming up with a different ball than they would use in the game. What's the theory behind that?

Yes, that is curious. Ask Wayne.

SA bit more national exposure from Kendall, but more guarded...

Quote:3. The Rice Owls received some bad news a couple of weeks ago when right-handed pitcher Jordan Stephens went down with an injury, but they’ve done a great job of overcoming that departure. The Owls have leaned on hard-throwing righty Zech Lemond to take over the important Friday role, and he’s flourished with a low-to-mid 90s fastball. Meanwhile, the offense rose to the occasion over the weekend against Florida International, scoring 24 runs in three games against an FIU pitching staff that previously had been performing at a very high level. As coach Wayne Graham would say, the Owls aren’t a finished product, but that performance against the Panthers was a big step forward for a team that struggled in the Houston College Classic just a few weeks ago.

Couldn't the different ball instill more confidence in Stanford's hitters through positive reinforcement? It would allow them to more easily see the benefits of going the other way.
