This discussion is inconclusive.
The only LIVE mascots we have ever had are GHO's...so I say yes... but the official documents merely say Owl. Numerous sites list us as GHO, but not the Rice site. The Athenian owl is on our seal, but that is an artistic representation of a 'wise' owl and not necessarily meant to imply that that specific species was intended as a mascot. I'm not sure they intended to identify a 'mascot' by doing so. I say that because just like our mascot costumes, some of them have been styled after specific species of owls, but I believe people selected them because they liked the look and not in order to imply that it was a different species of owl.
