Couple tidbits...

JC Reeves did, in fact, win CUSA Hitter of the Week.

Per Aaron Fitt, McDowell will be moved into the Sunday starter slot for the upcoming FAU series...

Quote:Aaron Fitt‏@aaronfitt·4 hrs
Had a good chat with @RiceOwlsBSB coach Wayne Graham, who will move Chase McDowell into Sunday starter role vs FAU. He's been a 2-way force.

PG Weekly Chat
Quote:Hey Kendall which teams in the state of Texas are likely to make a cws run?

At the end of the day, I think Rice is the most capable. Owls have an abundance of arms (even without Stephens) and has the most potential offensively of anyone in the state.

Quote:Kendall, curious to know how you would rank the top 5 teams in the state of Texas?
1. Rice 2. Sam Houston State 3. Houston 4. Texas 5. TCU

Quote:Any chance you travel to Houston next Tuesday to see Rice @ UH?

I live in Houston, so chances are I'll be there. Will see the Coogs/C of C on Saturday, along with FAU-Rice as well.

No. This is his second stint down here, as his wife grew up near the Galleria area and her parents still live there (which is a help given their two young kids). Kendall grew up around College Station, I believe, and after leaving A&M lived in Austin for several years before returning to Houston a couple years ago.

And Warren Nolan has us up to #3 in RPI ... although, IIRC, Boyd does a better job at keeping up with the year-to-year tweaks to the RPI formula.

In his latest power ratings, even Stitchhead is seeing the error in his ways, and recognizing Rice as a Top 10 team (#9, up from #18)...

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/...e-baseball

Quote:9. Rice (15-6)
Trending: UP
Last week: 18
Of note: How about this? The Owls went down to 16-1 FIU and swept three straight. And just in case you still question them, their strength of schedule is fourth nationally according to Boyd's World.

amusing re SOS

11. LSU (17-4)
Trending:
Last week: 12

Of note: Beyond Aaron Nola's brilliance, the Tigers couldn't handle Vandy's pitching depth. Strangely, even after playing VU, the strength of schedule is only 205th nationally.

That's my understanding, also.

I have had conversations with Boyd and have seen his contributions to baseball forums. So, I have some feeling for where he's at. He doesn't suffer fools gladly.

Warren Nolan is an unknown. Anyone have any background on him?

As for Massey, I rarely look at his ratings.

Both of these guys, like FBN (Jeremy), are unsung heroes to the college game.

Thanks, grol. I will say a couple of things for the Warren Nolan RPI ...

* His RPI figures seem to be much closer to Boyd's than they used to be.
* His data gets updated in near-real time as each final score comes in, so you can get a feel for RPI impact almost immediately (seems like within 30 minutes of completion of a game).

BA's round-up of Tuesday Games:

In other Top 25 action:
Quote:• No. 11 Rice routed Texas State, 14-1. Four Rice players collected at least two hits, led by Michael Aquino, who was 3-for-4 while John Clay Reeves had three hits and drove in two runs. The red-hot Reeves has 20 hits in his last six games.

Quote:Top 25 Upsets

• In another surprise, No. 23 Houston, which just moved into our rankings this week, lost to Lamar 4-2. Lamar was missing head coach Jim Gilligan, who was ill but listened to the game at home.

“This was a great win,” Gilligan said. “Our kids did a great job tonight. We intended on using several kids on the mound, as we normally do in midweek games.”

Senior Lance Warren (2-0) pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief, striking out three for the win.

Ahem, has anyone checked ISR's update this morning?

Also, what are our chances of keeping up this type of performance, especially missing Stephens for the rest of the season?

Boyd's RPI Needs report is up, btw. Obviously it's not worth nearly as much this far out, but just for information sake, it shows Rice as being able to drop 4-6 (depending on road/home mix) out of our final 32 and still winding up in top 8.

#4 SoS

Of the three schools with tougher schedules to date, two of them (#1 and #2) each played weekend series against a school that will never schedule us for games that count: Ourselves.

Boyd's ISR-based SOS:
1 Purdue
2 Stanford
3 Northern Illinois
4 Rice

ETA: Not quite as dramatic, but the RPI-based SOS that Warren Nolan puts out shows a similar story but puts yet another weekend opponent of ours ahead of us:
1 Brown
2 Stanford
3 Purdue
4 UNC Wilmington
5 Arizona State
6 Old Dominion
7 Rice
