The problem is there are teams in the NIT that could easily be in the NCAA. And there are some good teams that deserve the NIT but miss out (usually because they are a mid-major). Remember in the 1996-97 season, EMU had a real good computer ranking, a solid 20+ win season, beat Syracuse in the non-conference on the road, only to be snubbed by the NIT.
So it is good to have somewhere for these teams to go. But I agree that 48 teams after the NIT is too much, especially with some quality schools declining (Indiana, Buffalo).

Congrats to EMU. Rooting for Coach Murphy and Da'Shonte. Love to see you win the whole thing.

Game day! We open up at -11.5. Seems steep, but we've been very good at home this year.

Appreciate it! Good luck in the tourney. Don't beat up on our MAC brethren too much.

Hardly a peep about the game on campus either.
I know it's hard to promote a game on such short notice, but the school seems to have done a terrible job.

Less than 600.
I'd almost put money on it.

Well super, we shall see. All I can tell you is as a student, I've received ONE email thus far regarding anything about a game. On campus, I haven't seen any form of promotion (at least for the ohio game they tried to get the word out via flyers)
I dont know what email's you're receiving, but if in fact you have got them... maybe they should think about sending them to the student body (other than the one larcom sent out).
And if you REALLY think we are going to draw well on a two day notice, I think you're in for a rude awakening. We can barely draw 1,000 for an in-state game against CMU that has been on the schedule all year.........let alone TWO days.
I hope im wrong.

I've gotten a couple of emails as a non student. I've been debating about going. Yeah the media silence is deafening. But the big papers like the News and Free Press basically ignore the MAC these days. WMU has had a successful program in hoops and it is met by a collective yawn. And the Ann Arbor News-Stan Lee would do a better job covering EMU sports.
I'm guessing if this was the opening round of the NIT we would see more excitement. No one really knows what the CBI or CIT are about. I'm beginning to think the CIT was the brain child of some program director at CBSSports.

Dear easterneagles79,
Rome was not built in a day. Eastern's basketball attendance will take a few more years to get up to any respectable number, If, they continue to win games, and by that I mean winning 18-20 games a year. Until Coach Murphy came along Eastern's basketball program was terrible. You can't have a fifteen year non-winning program to all of a sudden start winning and expect fans to show up in droves.
People follow winners. Should they support their team even if it is losing game after game? In my opinion, yes, but I'm not the average fan.
How many students live in the dorms? 4,000. How many live in apartments? 2,000-3,000. Even if you had half of those numbers show up it would be 3,500. That's better than 600-700, but that half is probably not that interested in sports, so you can't expect that they are all going to show up.
With Eastern having winning programs you will have to build a walmart base like U-M. People who want to see winning programs and willing to maybe pay a lot less for tickets.
Everything hinges on winning. If one does not have that as a starting block, then one will never get there.

I totally agree with you Ken !
Thats why I said my guess was that it would be roughly 600 or so, which is no surprise to me !
Thats how it is, and thats how it goes around Ypsi, unfortunately.

Ken, I think easterneagles79 was referring to this specific game. I do think you are correct though, sustained success next year and the following would do great things for attendance. This year was (and continues to be) great for our fan base. Largest student crowd, I think, we've ever had (UMass), as well my anecdotal noticing of a general increase in interest among the students. We'll need a couple years to build more impressive attendance numbers, especially with non-students/alumni, but I believe we're on the right track.

This year's team played a very entertaining brand of basketball despite its offense freezes, I'm looking forward to next year.

Some perspective:
In college basketball, there are 349 Division I men’s programs. The NCAA Tourament takes 68 teams for its field. The NIT (32), CBI (16) and CIT (32) combine to up the number of programs in postseason play to 148, or 42.4 percent of all available teams

dude, i can't say it enough. you all are doing a great job with the student section. it was nonexistent from 2006-2011, and it wasn't great before that (no offense Bobbo, Ian, Collin and anyone else on here). student section hats off to you.....

Lack of media coverage is one of the top reasons for poor attendance IMO. The MAC is off the grid in MI.
