Our most recent struggles on the field (we've had many periods of struggling) led to the decline in attendance. Here is a snapshot of our fb attendance with corresponding record in the 21st century so far. Oh, and the 4 bowls were all losses but we took very good crowds to Houston vs Colorado and to New Mexico vs BYU. The other 2 we traveled light.

2000 44,715 (8-4)bowl
2001 28,360 (2-9)
2002 28,310 (2-10)
2003 20,009 (2-11) coach Nord fired
2004 41,209 (8-4) bowl, Price’s 1st yr
2005 47,899 (8-4) bowl
2006 42,444 (5-7)
2007 36,568 (4-8)
2008 37,296 (5-7)
2009 29,010 (4-8)
2010 29,349 (6-6) bowl
2011 26,498 (5-7)
2012 29,374 (3-9)Price retired
2013 28,375 (2-10) 1st year for Kugler

Yep, UTEP has proven they can ave. over 40,000 and 10,000 when putting a good product on the field/court. Southern Miss can put up good numbers too. UAB's hurdles are well documented. Not sure about the averages/capacities of others.

UTEP's fanbase is very similar to Memphis IMO...passionate and loyal, just not willing to pay to watch an inferior product. The numbers listed above are comparable to the Tigers over the last decade....40,000+ when decent...mid-upper twenties when not. Not sure what (if anything) can be derived from these types of numbers other than a snapshot of a team's ceiling and floor over a period of time.

Not so sure about football, dude. This past year, we averaged 29,214 at home to your 28,375. Some will claim that the Oklahoma State game skews our data. Well if we take our Oklahoma State game out, and you take your Oklahoma game out, we still come out on top 26,861 to your 26,742.

We've never drawn well for basketball, even when we had some decent teams. But I think it's fair to say we're about even for football.

We didn't play Oklahoma. Anyways, 2 win season vs 8 win season.

Yep, and pulling up the wrong year is what I get for posting at 2am...lol. At any rate, you guys did have some good attendance numbers a few years ago, so it might be you guys after all if you can revamp your football program.

What helps those numbers year in and out is the first game. Everyone including the family dog get up for it. We go with the anticipation that "THIS" is the year but after 3 or 4 games we find out that it isn't. So the attendance numbers start that awful slide that makes us mediocre in attendance (in comparison to big time schools) and no.2 in cusa. You watch, this years first game will average at least 35k.

I'm a Chicago Cubs fan too.

Miners and Cubs both give me the same preseason feeling 03-cloud9.

I usually feel the same way about both teams at the end of the season too. 03-pissed01-lauramac2

Opening with Texas Tech, I would guess around 40k... Tech will bring fans like they did last time...

LOL! Know the feeling well. Keep the faith. Next year will be THE Year!

I've always felt that urban universities should follow the minor league baseball promotion strategy..specifically targeting schools. Our local franchise incorporates AR reading goals and gets thousands to the ballpark via this promo. Good way to "grow your base" as well.

Why is it every time I see pics and videos of UTEP / Sun Bowl Stadium with a big football crowd its a bowl game or against Texas with the video by the tens of thousand long horn fans... even the band was playing tribute to the Longhorns in that thread starting video.

Seeing what you want to see? Texas has played at UTEP once in the last 20+ years. It looks like that video might have been taken by a Longhorns fan. The Sun Bowl is 50K stadium so there weren't tens of thousands of Longhorn fans there. We sold that one out on our own. Also, 'Texas Taps' was played in honor of both Texas and UTEP if you listen closely enough.

Not sure Longhorn fans respected UTEP enough to travel tens of thousands of fans to El Paso. But that certainly was the biggest crowd we have had which is understandable. Not sure who would want to have a picture in their sig with a pi$$ poor crowd. What's the point?

Here are all the over 50k games UTEP has had in the Sun Bowl regular season. You can only give Longhorn fans credit for a few thousand in only one of these games. NMSU, just 40 miles away, typically brings some but not many considering how close they are, probably because they expect to lose. Rice, Marshall and Fresno St did bring tens of thousands of fans I'm pretty sure.

UTEP is one of those rare nonAQ (G5 now) schools that does not rely on visiting fans to fill our stadium. An attractive opponent helps, sure......but it's not the only factor for most UTEP fans.

Shy, we usually average around 35k for the first game regardless of which team comes in. With TT playing here this first game we should get more than 45k, that's my guess. You have to realize that there's a whole slew of Tech fans in El Paso and in a way we have a sort of rivalry with them because we play them close here every time. They are an obnoxious bunch too and are hated as much as Ut-austin fans. 03-puke

I wonder if they'll bring them tortillas with them this year. I'll email the gestapo-in-charge and give him/her a heads up to look out for that. 05-ban

Yep... Even with a crappy-sure-to-lose team. How many fan bases can say that?

Bring Notre Dame or USC, and you will see 60-70K at the Sun Bowl (if they'd fit), just to watch our team get waxed..... How many others will do that for their team?

Sadistic? Maybe. But WTF, it's great fball family fun.
