The opening at Auburn is Bruce Pearl's "if he wants it," a source close to the SEC basketball program told CBSSports.com on Tuesday morning.

Whether Pearl will take the job remains unclear.

Pearl has declined public comment to CBSSports.com.

Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs met with Pearl in Knoxville on Monday, ESPN.com reported. Jacobs fired Tony Barbee after the Tigers' lost in the SEC Tournament. A source told CBSSports.com that Auburn might be willing to pay around $2 million per year for Pearl.

The 54-year-old coached at Tennessee for six seasons and made six NCAA Tournaments.

He was fired in March 2011 during an NCCA investigation into recruiting violations.

He's still serving a three-year show cause that expires in August.

This is a good coach who IMO shouldn't tie himself to the SEC or nothing. He would be a good hire at Virginia Tech, but who knows where he lands, but to tie yourself to a conference or nothing isn't a smart move unless he knows that the almighty SEC isn't all that mighty.

I truly believe in second chances, but he's already had that. The dude is a known cheat. After lying on Coach Jimmy Collins and the Illini, everybody finally found out who the real cheater and violator was. If I were Auburn and any other program, I wouldn't touch Bruce Pearl with a 10-foot pole. You might have some immediate, short term success, but he will set your program back in years and scholarships once he's caught. And he will get caught...just ask Calipari!

When I saw "Auburn", I see "Bruce Pearl". Auburn will give Pearl the resources to win.

How does Auburn deal with his show cause, which doesn't expire until August? He can't recruit, unless Auburn wants to go before the NCAA and have them scrutinize their system. If they hire him and let him recruit, they could be subject to sanctions. It also seems odd that they'd hire a coach who can't recruit during the July recruiting periods.

EDIT: I got my answer. He won't be allowed to recruit until August 24. Auburn is not contesting the restrictions and does not have to go before the COI. They will just live with him not being able to recruit until August.

Fans are showing up at the Auburn airport to greet Bruce Pearl. Kind of the anti-Gene Chizik.

Yada, yada, yada... Auburn hired the NCAA guy that investigated Bruce Pearl a while back after their Cam Newton saga to make sure their future actions are air tight. That guy, Dave Didion, signed off on Bruce's hire.

This is going to be good for Auburn immediately. I wouldn't be surprised if they're dancing next year.

Not sure if any of this is true but pretty damning.

I love Bruce Pearl, I would take him in a heart beat, but I know they still pay players. Well they did pay for Greg Robinson.
