Just beat the number 2 team in the country. 3-0 over Oregon. Good for them.

Lots of players moved on last year. Amazing to see it didn't matter.

Softball really is a sport where 1 good pitcher can make you dominant.

RE: JMU Softball
And not only do we have a dominant pitcher, she's just a sophomore. I know a lot of people were skeptical when they let the previous coach go after moderate success and also skeptical when half the team didn't return from last year's NCAA at-large team, but Mickey Dean has proven himself in just year 2 and with a team full of freshmen and sophomores. This dude is the real deal.

JMU softball will be successful as long as Mickey Dean is the head of that program. He is a my way or the highway kind of guy that runs his program like a business ---- and guess what it works.

If you need plans for this weekend, JMU softball hosts Hofstra Saturday at 3 for a doubleheader and Sunday at 2. Hofstra and JMU are the top 2 teams in the CAA, and both are receiving votes in both polls(tied for 31st in ESPN poll, JMU 26th Hofstra 29th in coaches poll).

JMU wins the first two games against Hofstra! Final game in the series tomorrow. After this weekend, this team may be ranked, instead of just receiving votes.

Thanks for the reminder! And I think you're right, the Lady's should be ranked if they sweep.

RE: JMU Softball
The third game easily could've gone either way though, wasn't nearly like the two games yesterday were. We're also lucky we faced Hofstra at the beginning of the season and here, instead of at the end and in NY like last year. We got lucky Taylor Newton was feeling hot! CAA Rookie of the week potentially? This is going to be an exciting season for the dukes!

What's "lucky" about playing HU on our home field? It was JMU's turn to host the regular season series. I say the series sweep is just another sign that the times are a changin' in the pecking order of CAA softball powers. ;-)

Nothing "lucky" about that sweep. The softball team is legit and has an excellent coaching staff. You play your schedule.

Team is really good...good enough to get an at-large if things fall apart in the CAA Tournament probably.

RE: JMU Softball
so maybe all those girls who left the program last year, left because the incoming players were better and they saw the writing on the wall?

just speculating. I have no clue.

I heard the girls that left did not like the business like, my way or the highway, coaching approach. It was a huge culture shift from the previous staff.

Seems to be yielding excellent results -- novel idea to run a program like a business.

The Softball team swept a doubleheader at Virginia Tech yesterday. It wasn't 21-16, but it is still always fun to say "We Beat Tech". I just peaked at their schedule and see they play UVA also. Would be fun to sweep them both!

Did we seriously lose a game to Drexel?... At least we got it together in the second game.
