RE: AAC commish: 'We are a conference of opportunity
16 is worse then 14 which is worse 12 ... so the value of the schools have to make it worthwhile the trouble of the expansion.
We know that Boise State and the Aztecs preferred the MWC to the American, that BYU preferred independence to the American, and Fresno on its own on an island is objectively better off in the MWC, so if the American needs those four to justify going to 16 ...
... then,.fortunately.for the American, they are going to be able to stay at 12/11.
If they need to add some BBall oomph, they can do that without watering down their FB by adding Wichita Olympic sports when Navy joins FB only. Right now, they stand as the Go5 conference looking to receive the most NCAA bids ... even factoring realignment, since the MWC is only looking at 2, and the American is looking at 3/4 even without UL, and incoming Tulsa going dancing this year on the back of winning the CUSA autobid.

Who's gonna wanna be in their division. The AAC should have stayed at 11 or picked up Georgia State. They are smack in the middle of the footprint, good recruiting, easy airport, major market, facilities, etc. Tulsa has a ceiling.
Georgia State? You really must be kidding. Sure, Tulsa isn't a school likely to be the leagues bell cow powerhouse. That said, they are not likely to be a complete embarrassment either. Tulsa is a strong academic performer that will consistently field solid teams that can compete in the league. Georgia State is nowhere near that level yet---and may never reach it. Im not saying they wont---Im just saying its no certainty. That said---if Georgia St builds their athletic program to the point they look to be a good AAC fit---Im sure there will be plenty of support within the league for their addition.
As for who is going to be in a western division with Boise, SDSU, BYU, and Fresno---how about Houston, SMU, Tulsa, and Tulane?

Man it gets old hearing the AAC pretend to be something they are not. If AAC is a power conference, so is the MAC and MWC. Aresco looks like a fool. Thompson and Steinbrecher aren't running around blabbing all the time acting like that.

I'd rather have a conference commissioner that aspires to be more and looks stupid sometimes than a conference commissioner that shuts up and watches his conference get picked apart to nothing.
C-USA stood back - and look what happened.

Then you have not been listening to Thompson for the last 6 years. Didn't he say the MW was an AQ conference and should be considered one? I believe he filed the paperwork that he believed proved as much. If I recall correctly, ArkStfan has indicated that the MW and CUSA could have had a play-in game for an AQ slot and the MW rejected that set-up because they believed they should be AQ without any special arrangement. I don't remember if he said CUSA also rejected it (they may have as well). Dumbest decision ever by the way....

those schools are not coming to the AAC unless the MWC collapses. The conference needs to focus on increasing its major metro area expansion so that they can improve their tv contract - Army, Buffalo, UMass, N. Illinois, ODU.

If all it took was a school located in or near large metro areas, the AAC would still be a power conference.
It also takes content that people in those metro areas want to watch.

First choice is Army.
Add two good all other sports from A10 to match with Army.
Then add MAC schools all-sports N.Illinois,Buffalo and UMass.
AAC needs to be more than old CUSA south.

I dont think the MAC schools are a good match. They are all driving distance from one another with 60 years of rivalry history and still only average 15K a game as a conference. I don't understand it, but it is what it is. That said, I do like the idea of not being all old CUSA schools.
Unless the AAC can go national with schools like Fresno, Boise, AF, SDSU, maybe UNLV, New Mexico--then the AAC probably stands pat for now. The other option down the road if no national conference emerges would be teams with the potential to attract 40K on saturdays---Army, UTSA, Old Dominion, Arky State, ULL--- could be some names that draw future interest if they develop.

Basically, that's about the same as the Metro was. an opportunity some schools had a chance to run with.

Thompson said that when UU, TCU, and BYU were still in the MWC.

He said that in 2011 and 2012.

Correct. Here's the catch: If you don't move, then things at Tulane would get far worse.
Banowsky is a horrible commish compared to Aresco.

Does the MAC have five hoop teams in the latest coaches' Top 25? Did the MAC football champ beat the Big 12 champ in the last Fiesta Bowl?
If the American can't crow now, when would be a more appropriate time?
Should we wait for the UConn women to make the Final Four?
