Shots Shots Shots
Pastner has done good things. But the thing about him that gets under my skin is the way he talks to the media and by extension, the fans. His pre- and post-game interviews with Andy Katz yesterday were beyond embarrassing. Bowen needs to pull him aside at some point and set him straight.
We know that UCONN made shots and the Tigers didn't. We aren't stupid. So stop treating us like we are. We want to know why Giffey had open 3 after open 3. Why did they get into the lane so easy? Why did we settle for bad shots in the half court set? There's obviously a problem. Shed some light on it.
His interviews are so bad that the media shouldn't waste time talking to him anymore. You don't get anything out of him except clown speak e.g. "Kevin Ollie is a future Hall-of-Famer; Doris Burke is a great sixth man; I want to play you (Andy Katz) one-on-one; we have to win for the economy; etc." Andy didn't ask if Doris would be a good sixth man. He asked the keys to the game.
At halftime, Pastner said UCONN was making shots and the Tigers weren't. If that's all it's about, why is Pastner even there? After he recruits the players, by his rationale he isn't needed. It's a players game. You roll the ball out and they either make shots or they don't.
I wondered last night if he even had a clue why they were getting drubbed.
Here's what I (or any other normal person) would have said at halftime if I were the coach:
"There's a lot of things we aren't doing right now. Defending is the biggest issue. We're giving them open looks from outside and allowing their guards to penetrate without much resistance. We have to get tougher. Plain and simple. That will be the emphasis in the second half."
After the game I would have said:
"There's some elements to our team that we can't change. We were built to play fast and be led by our senior guards. They've had good days and bad days. To win games in the tournament, we can't have the bad days out of the gate. What we can control is our effort, especially on the defensive end. We have to bring the intensity every night. Defense is about desire. Tonight it wasn't there. And I'm angry about that. We will fix it come next week. If we lose, it won't be because we laid down."
Why is it so hard for him to say that?

See my first sentence. I didn't say he hasn't done good things.
But maybe I should apply to be his media specialist?

Great post! I would have put those comments pretty much the same as you.
I agree with you completely. The group I watched last night's game with cringed with anticipation at both interviews and then giggled and shook our heads afterwards.
I commented that he needs a PR handler like the pro athletes are given when they first join the NBA or the NFL. They actually attend a series of classes and practice formulating useful statements that share something unique about the game, their happiness or frustration and then offering something new about their intentions (to improve, celebrate, practice harder, whatever).
Although it seems to me Josh is totally unaware of how unpolished he appears on camera, one of my fellow Tigers fans last night believes Josh knows EXACTLY what he is doing and gets a kick out of it!!
Gosh, I hope not. :(

Excellent post. Some people would rather die than admit that they did something wrong. Probably insecurity.

Classic response. Of course after having almost 12 hours to come up with your response. Clowns gone wild.
