RE: Braun gone
Running Eversley out of Rice was a Braun puzzler four years ago although I do think Marcus Jackson has the potential to be that type of player in another year or two. I never questioned Braun's ability to recruit. I don't know how much he is playing these days but check out Villanova and Dylan Ennis to see another former Owl in the NCAA's the next few days.
Getting back on topic, Capel is an interesting possibility. That connection to John Lucas is intriguing. It was the Lucas influence that brought Aaric Murray to TSU this year and I think his 38-point effort last night should prove to everyone he is a legit NBA prospect. It is weird how the Duke coaching tree pales for the most part in comparison to say the Rick Pitino or Mike Montgomery trees. Mike Brey (who struggled this year at Notre Dame) and Tommy Amaker are really the only bright spots from that coaching tree, and there have been a number of misfires (Quin Snyder and Johnny Dawkins was on the hot seat but finally did get Stanford into the NCAA's after six years at Stanford).

I45 - I hope you're not telling us you picked TSU to win it all in your billion dollar bracket. That was a 16 seed beating a 16 seed. Let's see how Cal Poly does against Wichita State Friday
(of course my billion dollar bracket is still intact for at least 3 1/2 more hours - it's probably kaput after that)

SMU beats UC Irvine in the NIT as well. Not sure if that adds anything new to what is known about Russell Turner as SMU is pretty damn good.

RE: Braun gone
Really good finish of the Iona vs La Tech game. Iona led most of the way playing on the road in front of one of the few loud crowds the NIT has had. Not surprising since they won 14 road games this year. La Tech got a put back with 2+ seconds left to take the lead (and a great block out down low) but Iona had a 60 foot shot go off the backboard and rattle the rim that would have won it.

I am pulling for Mike White and La Tech in the NIT. He sure would look good patrolling the Tudor/Autry court sidelines in a gray and blue tie!

Deadspin just put out this interesting article and infographic that helps demonstrate one way to perform better in basketball: SPEND MORE MONEY.
http://regressing.deadspin.com/cash-rule...60/@kylenw
Not surprisingly, almost every single team that is favored (by ranking) in the first round of the NCAAs spends more on basketball than their opponent.

FWIW, Rice ranks 97th on this money-spent-on-basketball list, at $3.21 million. Harvard is 254th, at $1.23 million ... and we know how that matchup went. (BTW, we finished #317 in Ken Pomeroy's basketball performance ranking.)

What did we spend $3.21 million on in a year? I am shocked.

Spending $3.21M in a year on almost anything is pretty easy to do.

Being that the major difference is spending between us and Harvard is athletic scholarships (let's say 15 scholarships at $60,000 a pop) that means we are spending $1 mil more than Harvard is. When it looks like we are barely spending anything on basketball, I wonder where that $1 mil is going. Coaches? Recruiting? Wherever it is going, we aren't getting a very good return on it with regards to results or attendance.

In answer to Antarius:
Well, salary+benefits for the staff is easily about half, to begin with. Does it include scholarships? There's another half-million. Etc.

Still, looking at the deadspin article, we are outspending SEVERAL teams on the NCAA tournament list. I guess my question is, what are we spending money on that they aren't?

I bet you're right that it's all direct program expenses -- coaches salaries/benefits + scholarships (housing, living stipends for off campus, books, tuition, etc.) + travel expenses + all of the other expenses that add up in a year.
I think a lot of schools don't "charge" their Athletic Departments for scholarships, so Rice's number may be inflated, or not exactly apples:apples.
