Trucks and HOA's
Quote:Teen fighting rule against parking pickups in driveway overnight

WILDWOOD, MO (KTVI)– A teen bought his dream car, which happens to be a 1965 Ford pickup. Now, he has parking problems.
Matt Perry worked two jobs and saved the money to buy the two toned pickup from his neighbor.
Perry says he didn’t realize when he bought the truck that Valley View Subdivision where he lives has a rule against parking pickups in the driveway overnight.
Perry says he would park the truck in the garage, but that’s where his parents park their vehicles.
Now, he could be fined by the homeowners association for violating the subdivision’s bylaws.
Perry can change the rule if he collects 130 signatures from homeowners in favor of doing so.
The issue is getting attention on Facebook from supporters who have launched a campaign called Save Matt’s Truck.

Anyone run into this in Memphis?

I'm not in Memphis but this is a constant fight in our neighborhood.

It's just a matter of time before that young man's truck is broken into or wheels taken off, no matter what neighborhood you live in.

But, I feel his pain, because when we have company I hate to have them park outside, so I pull my old SUV outside and let company park in the garage. Nice neighborhood, just lots of rodents running around in the dead of the night looking for someone else's misfortune.

Poor kid. Is it specific to pickups or just no vehicles allowed at all? My mother's HOA has a limit of no parking in the streets and 3 vehicles in the driveway, but no vehicles in the driveway is ridiculous.

Poor kid? I dare say his parents know the rules of their HOA...they should have had that conversation before the kid spent his money on the truck.
If they weren't aware, that's their own fault. They're the homeowners.

If they want to avoid the fine, either get the signature from the other members, or his parents should back their car out of the driveway & let him park in the garage. The rule is against pickup trucks in the driveway, not other vehicles.

If that's the case then yeah I couldn't agree more with you. I thought it was for any vehicle so the kid basically couldn't buy a vehicle. I couldn't listen to the clip if they elaborated on that in it because I'm on a PC with no speakers or headphones. The article didn't really clarify. That one's on his parents then. They're aren't outside the same rules as the rest of the neighbors.

Some HOAs have a limit that can be parked out side...driveway or street. Never heard specifically just trucks in the driveway being singled out.

What's wrong with a nice looking truck in the driveway? I haven't seen a picture, is it a beater?

Any idea why a truck and not a car? It's kind of strange.

I thought this was something about the women that work in parking lots at truck stops.

Especially when you consider some trucks won't fit in some garages like in my neighborhood. No way my son's pickup will fit in my garage.

No clue; it's just what the article said:

Perry says he didn’t realize when he bought the truck that Valley View Subdivision where he lives has a rule against parking pickups in the driveway overnight.

I'm wondering if maybe it was originally to keep big work vehicles that people may drive home out of sight, prevent equipment theft, etc.

My truck now uses stock exhaust, but my previous truck had flowmasters....If my neighbors complained about my truck, I'd probably run straight pipe and drive around the neighborhood at 2am.

The HOA president called me one day to ask if that was my bass boat in the drain between my house and the neighbor. Nope, it is my son's.

When is he going to come get it? I told him I didn't know, I didn't know why it was there, but there must be a good reason and I bet it wasn't doing him any good there instead of where he paid to store it.

I called my son and he said he got too late to take it out to his storage facility so he dropped it off at my house. Long story.

But yes, I wanted to hook it up to my suv and drive it up and down the street a few times.

HOA's serve to protect the homeowner's property values.

Apparently protecting their homes value isn't a concern to many of the posters in this thread.

I'm not against protecting property vales. I'm against overreaching by HOA's in the name of protecting property values. You can't honestly contend a truck parked in a driveway is going to have a meaningful impact on property values.

I had a friend in Memphis get into trouble with her HOA for a putting to a 3' wooden cross for Easter. I know some HOA's that restrict political signs. I'm 100% against HOA's that would infringe on the free speech of their residents.

RE: Trucks and HOA's
An HOA is a local government that isn't restrained by the constitutional restraints we normally place on government. If you waive your rights voluntarily and choose to live under a local government with no traditional restraints....you deserve to be tyrannized by your neighbors. No crying later.

There'd be a citation waiting for you, though...

Look, I'm sure the article has omitted some details, some integral facts. But this is not unusual for an HOA. Its basically private membership of sorts. They are in abundance here in AZ; they even decree you can't keep your garage door open. But its voluntary. As long as they don't discriminate against protected classes, no one forced this kids family to live there.

Its no big deal, doesn't seem newsworthy. Get the signatures.

If you're stupid enough to buy in a neighborhood that has a HOA, you deserve anything you get. Sorry, kid. Not your fault your parents are morons.

In their defense, maybe he's the moron, and not them. I'm sure there are many families where entering an HOA is the smart thing, but the kids ignore what their parents tell them. The article does not go into detail about the family dynamic (nor should they), lol...
