RE: Rice cancels game against UH football?
If this is based on the claim from a while back, that's been discussed and no, we didn't. If this is new, enlighten us.
The reason we don't have games scheduled currently is because UH 'cancelled' them by jumping conferences on us. Hopefully we'll get back to playing in the relatively near future.

"Mack Rhoades, UH's vice president for intercollegiate athletics, said the Cougars prefer to have only one FCS opponent on the schedule but "were put in a tough situation" when a Football Bowl Subdivision non-conference opponent decided not to play "10 months before the start of the season." UH did not name the team, but sources indicated it was Rice."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Bayou Bucket had only been scheduled through 2013. There was nothing scheduled beyond 2013, just a gentleman's agreement to try and continue the series beyond 2013.

"decided not to play" is not the same as "cancelled."
Rice had no agreement with UH beyond 2013.
Change in conference affiliation meant that 2014 UH game would have to be slotted as nonconference. IIRC, that would mean Rice would have to cancel a nonconference matchup already scheduled, and no crystal ball to know that New Mexico St would later renege.

This is still frustrating because the Chronicle article also claimed that UH approached every FBS school with an opening and even offered to play on the road. I am curious if that offer was made to Kaarlsgard prior to Rice signing up the Hawaii game. The whole thing just doesn't look good for either of us. The Rice/UH beat writer does not help things with "cancellation" in the headline, but the Chronicle never fails to sink to further journalistic lows.

Was UH still shopping when NMS cancelled and Hawaii was scheduled?

RE: Rice cancels game against UH football?
That whole story is BS. Rice did nothing wrong. What the article doesn't mention is UH could have played Virginia or Cal, but its head coach elected against it. Rice didn't screw UH over. Now I have no doubt that UH was pissed that Rice didn't want to get out of an already scheduled game to play its cross town rival, which is why UH moved its scheduled home game vs Cincy that was scheduled at Rice to BBVA stadium at the last moment.

What's all the fuss? Rice is playing UH this fall, on October 4th, at HRS.
Seriously, thank-you Mademen for the balanced comment.

Guess the confirmation from fellow Coog Mademen caused you to remove what would have been another Rice bashing post.

Hawaii
It is a shame the timing was all wrong because I would have rather seen Houston than Hawaii. However, I would not have wanted Rice to break a contract to schedule Houston because that would have left an already contracted school in a bad position. We might have bought one out but would Houston come up with the money for it.

Oh I'm quite skeptical of Mademen's dubious version of events. But I don't want to get into it here.

Hmm, who should we trust? An esteemed and popular member of the local media, or some guy who can't even spell "Wiess" correctly?

Hymie, funny you don't know there's no finer compliment you could have just given us. Except for maybe 'national champions.'

RE: Rice cancels game against UH football?
Mack Rhoades has made a public statement saying an expected opponent decided not to play 10 months before the start of the season, leaving UH "in a tough situation". He didn't name the school, but unnamed sources indicated it was Rice.
You'd think Rice would rebut a public accusation such as this. Unless of course, it's true.

Even if the school to which he was referring was Rice I would see no reason for our administration to respond to that statement. Their lack of rebuttal is meaningless either way.

It isn't a "public accusation" if it's from "unnamed sources," and it is therefore unsubstantiated. Also, once again, Rice and UH did not have a game scheduled for 2014 once UH left the conference. Do you understand that if a game isn't on the schedule, then it can't be cancelled?
