Absolutely no killer instinct in this fan base. You got to take chances to build a program. Look how successful boise state was by playing high profile teams to start the season.

And for me, that's why I still want to play them. I'll take their money, and eliminate the Oberlin College legacy.

Just once I want to beat them. And then never play them again would be fine by me.

Too bad Fball schedules are made out so far in advance. Would have been nice to catch them in Fickel's last year. Just like when they suddenly agreed to play UC in basketball when we had our worst team in decades. Then immediately following the game Matta said they'd probably never play us again.

I mean, UC gets return games (see Miami (FL), NC State, BYU) just not with regional schools (Ohio State, Michigan) who recruit the Cincinnati area hard already.

That's all true. Our timing in playing them in either sport hasn't been good but more than that, I just don't think UC should just be willing to go to Columbus for a paycheck when other P5 schools are willing to reciprocate with us in some way. Even MI is coming here for basketball as a result of our agreement.

That is the very reason why Ohio State only agrees to play us on an occasional basis. If we played them every couple years we would have a much better odds at catching them on a down year. Playing them only four times over fifteen years makes it less of a probability.

UC should receive at the least a 2-1 from them. If it's merely a paycheck we are seeking, then sched a Bama, USC, Oregon ... ect.. The only real reason to have them on the sched is to see them lose to an in state school. Of course they would never schedule us again.

I don't like not getting any kid of home game in return but even if they agree to a return game tey'd buy their way out of it anyway. With that in mind I would agree to play them if:

UC's recruiting doesn't take a hit staying in the AAC. If it does we would struggle to ever beat OSU.

We bring our conference officials. I don't think the Big Ten officials intentionally blew the calls in the UC Illini game favoring the Illini, etc. but calls never go your way when you are playing away due to crowd influence and the Big 10 officials knowing who signs their paychecks.

The paycheck is too huge to pass up. Not a nice payday but a "do something for the program" kind of payday.

The UNC game is gone but i wish we could have the Tenn and Illini games back. UC was short on a handful of plays in the Tenn game that would have made a huge difference to the end result. The officiating aside in the Illini game, our coaching staff was new and probably went with a game plan that suited them more then it suited our personnel. it killed me watching both those games but, talent wise, i don't think there was much of a disparity. Give Tenn credit in that they made more plays than UC but i don't think the illini game was representative at all of UC football.

There's a lot of humiliation involved in taking an ass whipping to get a big pay check.

Illinois? Purdue?

We've also got a home-and-home with Nebraska coming up. They don't recruit Ohio much now, but now that they're not playing games in Texas any more they're going to start to.

Agreed. That's why my first criteria is that our recruiting doesn't take a step back. No big paycheck is worth taking an a$$ kicking.

RE: Playing OSU in Columbus - should we?
Purdue, Illinois, NC State, Oregon State, Pitt, and Syracuse all struggled to win games in Nippert. Most of the recent games against that group were blowouts too. Bearcats are in large group of good programs that struggle win on the road against high major competition unless they are having a top ten type year. Losing big against North Carolina and Illinois last season hurt but it doesn't change the fact that if those schools came to Cincinnati the potential for a blowout in UC's favor could be the likely result.

Winning at Ohio State is going to be difficult unless the Cats can pass the ball at will. Miami Fl is such a tossup game at this point because their program isn't what it use to be. Playing the Hurricanes in Florida used to be an automatic loss but today they are not the dominant home team there were for about two decades.

Everyone has posted some good pros and cons for continuing to play Ohio State. I'm with Rag on this. It would absolutely destroy the pride of many (not all) OSU fans if Cincinnati or any other Ohio team beat them in their house. I hate to break the news but OSU fans and alumni don't view Cincinnati football any differently than they do Toledo, Kent State, Miami, OH or Ohio University. For them, there's OSU and then everybody else in the State of Ohio. They are and have been the big fish in the pond and I don't disagree with that. How do we put a dent in that notion? If we continue to play them and maybe just one time we end up winning a game. No one expects Cincinnati to go in to the Horseshoe and beat them. They have a whole lot more to lose than we do because of that perception. I say let's continue to play them regardless of a return game not just because of a chance to beat 'em but I want our program to say we will play anybody, anywhere, anytime and try to smash them in the mouth. If we want a good barometer of the state of our football program and where it is heading then we should play as many of the best programs that we can. Now if we end up in a P5 conference, then that is another matter in regard to playing OSU.
