Sharp RBI double for Cook.

Runners on 2nd & 3rd with only one out

Ewing gets an IBB to load them up for Aquino.

Cook lines it to RF, kind of sloppy D lets him reach second but he was committed to stretch it right off the bat.

Jonh Clay sends a sharp liner that the SS almost has but lets trickle away. Flick to second not in time by a hare's breath, and all runners are safe.

3-0 for the home team.

Flick to second was in time. Missed call by an umpire with a direct view 10 feet away. Fortunate for Rice.

McD with a short chopper in front of short and again shows off speed down the line to be safe at first.

Big Sky running on contact scores from second, just ahead of a tag.

5-0

RE: Rice-TCU game thread
Chase living with a rabbit foot today-- leadoff single, sac bunt, single (they inexplicably hold their fastest runner at 3B), line shot double play...but we'll take it!

Warren first pitch ground out to 2B.
Byrd HBP. Runner on 1B, one out.
Stainback singled though hole. Runners on 1B and 3B, one out. Gotta capitalize here...
Cook RBI double! 02-13-banana Runners on 2B and 3B, one out. Keep it going, guys!
Ewing intentionally walked. Bases loaded, one out.
New TCU pitcher, Jr RHP Trey Teakell (3.09 ERA, .154 BAA, 5 BBs, 14 Ks in 11.2 IP)...
Aquino struck out on 3 pitches. Arghhh! Situational hitting-- you absolutely MUST put the ball in play in that situation. Change your approach at the plate!
Reeves clutch, 2-out, infield RBI single! 02-13-banana Bases still loaded, 2 outs.
McDowell clutch, 2-out, 2-strike, 2-RBI single! 02-13-banana 02-13-banana Runners on 1B and 2B, two outs. Great, great AB by Chase.
Teykl flied out.
A veritable explosion-- almost a week's worth of runs in one inning!

Good guys take a 5-0 lead into the top of the sixth inning.

RE: Rice-TCU game thread
Just took a look at the stats. We have an OPS of .667 (.336 slugging and .331 OBP). The OBP is actually better than I expected it to be. With those numbers, we're going to play a lot of low scoring games. Per Bill James's runs created stat, we should have scored 69 runs YTD. We've scored 76 (4.75/game), so we are actually doing better scoring runs than creating them. Our pitchers have given up 44 runs (2.75/game), with an ERA of 2.25. WTG pitchers. Per James's Pythagorean formula, with a 76-44 runs advantage, we should be 12-4 instead of 10-6. All of these stats are probably skewed by small sample sizes early in season, and also by pitchers being ahead of hitters, particularly in cold weather.

For comparison, last year for the full season we had a .741 OPS (.372 slugging, .369 OBP). So we are considerably behind where we were last year offensively. That would project to 348 runs created and we scored 332 (5.19/game), so we are actually doing slightly better with offensive efficiency this year. Last year's pitchers had an ERA of 2.83 and gave up 230 runs (3.59/game). With a 348-230 advantage in runs, Pythagorean says we should have been 43-21 and we were 44-20.

Last year we fielded at .974 and this year we are fielding at .986. Unearned runs are down from 0.7/game to 0.5/game.

I just backed up to it. 2B's foot was off the bag when he got the ball. Stepped back to it, but the slide was there first.

Yes.

Thanks.

It did look questionable from the stands, but too hard to tell.
