I have no idea why they're not paying their dues since just about every teacher claims to love their union.

Regardless that it is not an enforceable law, the union threatened to send teachers who stopped paying dues to collection agencies. Letters were also sent to all union members that they must hand over bank and credit card account numbers so that the union can automatically deduct dues from their accounts.

As a result, the Mackinac Center, a free market think tank in Michigan, filed a lawsuit against the MEA for attempting to force teachers to stay in the union and to continue to pay dues against their will.

Shortly after the lawsuit was filed the union informed the teachers named in the lawsuit that they were no longer members and back dues were no longer being sought.

As noted, the MEA has claimed that few teachers have left the union. MEA officials say that only around 1,500 teachers have quit the union since the right-to-work law passed in 2012.

Despite that sunny claim, the union's executive director, Gretchen Dziadosz, recently admitted that 8,000 teachers are in arrears with their dues.

The new state law maintains that union dues are no longer to be automatically deducted from teachers' paychecks by the State of Michigan. That means teachers are supposed to pay their dues on their own.

You pay for the negotiating power of the union. I can't believe some low life's would be ok letting someone else bargain their wage and then not pay for that privilege. They wouldn't make that wage if not for the union. We have 8000 run of the mill scum in Michigan.

Bargain their wage? Who you think benefits more from that? Not the teachers.

I know a few teachers who are only in the union because of the liability policy.

Something to consider when the “teachers are underpaid” mantra is spewed.

Pretty clear there are 8000 teachers in Michigan who are Republicans and don't want their money going to support Democrats.

They probably are the ones who actually put the kids first.

It's uncomfortable for her once a year after awhile people forget. Now if push came to shove and she crossed a picket... persona non grata the rest of her career.

$485 and only used once a year.

Sounds like the typical gym membership.

For the most part but over a career the union will pay for itself many many many many many times over. Just look at the salaries in the right to work states vs. Union States.

Yeah and look at the cost of living and the higher tax rates.

almost all of the "growing states" are right to work states.
