Sixth Man
If awards are based on conference stats, how does a guy who started seven games in MAC play and miss five due to injury get named sixth man?

Because he deserves it. He wouldn't have missed 5 games without a little help. Thankfully the coaches vote for these awards and they recognize what each player brings to their respective teams.

Shannon Evans outranks him in every single category and is a true sixth man coming off the bench in all 28 games.

But he's not a sixth man!

RE: Sixth Man
There's an agreed on definition of what constitutes a 6th man on every team? Can the 7th or 8th man be better than the 6th man? Is the 6th man always not as good as the first 5?

I think the problem with the award is that it's not something that every team handles in the same way. Could the 6th man be a starter if he logs the 6th most minutes on his team?

Maybe there should be 12 nominees: the guy on each team who is 6th in minutes played. I wonder what that list would look like? Who has time to look it up?

RE: Sixth Man
I did a quick look: Evans is 5th in total minutes played for UB in MAC games. Kretzer is 3rd on the Zips in total minutes played in MAC games and that even includes missing 5 games.

Jarren Skeete is actually 6th in minutes for UB. Pat Forsythe is 6th in minutes played for Akron.

A sixth man does not start half of his teams conference games, this is a common sense thing...

No... Now he he be a guy with a few starts but if you're a starter then so be it.

I would say a fair definition for eligibility would be That you start less than x percent of the games you played in... x=33,25,....

I guess the point being made is not a knock against him for missing games due to injury, but rather that if he missed 5 conference games, and had 7 conference starts, then he started a majority of the conference games he played in.

What should the award be based on, starting fewer than 1/3 of conference games? Starting fewer than 1/3 of all games?

And therein lies the problem. Like POY or COY, what it means is solely in the mind of the voter. At least All-MAC is easily understood to mean who are the best 5 players in the conference? The individual awards are a whole lot murkier.

Minutes per game
Jake Kretzer: 25.5
Travis Wilkins: 23.4

FG%
Kretzer: .387
Wilkins: .447

3pt%
Kretzer: .353
Wilkins: .448

Reb/Ast
Kretzer: 3.0/1.1
Wilkins: 2.0/1.4

Pts
Kretzer: 7.8
Wilkins: 7.1

Travis Wilkins has been huge off the bench for Ohio this year and has started games recently only because two starters in front of him have gone down with injuries. Kretzer isn't the clear cut winner.

I would think there hardly ever is a clear cut winner of an award like this. There is a winner, and the coaches decide who it is for whatever reasons they like. That's about all you can say. Congrats to him.

Adjusted. Glenn Bryant got screwed.
