IF they do it, they had better get a guy with the talent and the heart he had because he was always a gamer.

Don't get me wrong, they need someone to fill in for him once he retires but if they release him and not give him the "Retirement Honor" it will be a bad PR move by the franchise IMO.

It's a business, PTNC, and there is no loyalty any longer on either side. Everyone's career comes to an end eventually. The trick is going out on top, if possible.

I get the salary cap angle, heck I get Steve Smith being as old as he is angle, but to cut/release a player like that and not even let him retire considering what he has meant to the organization is bull****. Panthers have no one to blame but themselves for not drafting or trading for receivers to compliment him.

There is no loyalty any longer, dude. It's a different age.

RE: Steve Smith could be out in Carolina
people laud the NFL and their strictly enforced salary cap, while ripping baseball, but if this was baseball the Panthers would be bringing Smith back to end his career in Carolina. Same with the Giants and Tuck. The cap is so prohibitive in football that Carolina was forced into either dumping Smith a year too early or a year too late. They chose the latter.
