Babin... Waaaaaaeeeh??

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/105839...free-agent

He voided the last two years of his contract to become a free agent. He was going to make over 6 million per the next two years. He is no spring chicken.

Probably wants to go to a playoff contender. Jacksonville is not.

RE: Babin... Waaaaaaeeeh??
Obviously, why would ANYONE really want to play in Jacksonville these days.

But, the comment by WMU83 got be thinking. With the way that Babin seems to move around so much, and if I recall, he was cut mid season in Philly a few years ago. I'm wondering if maybe he isn't a very good locker room guy. Personally, I have never met or talked with Jason, but I always thought he seemed like a decent dude whenever you saw him or heard an interview with him.

It just strikes me as odd that a guy that has really been pretty productive and every stop and has teams that snatch him up quickly when he is available. Just seems to always get let go pretty quickly as well. Maybe its just the nature of the NFL, signing guys and then having to let them go for financial reasons and he falls into the category of 2nd tier guys that make a good pay day so cutting them saves you salary cap. I don't know. I just find it odd how much he seems to jump around each year.

I still can't believe the NFLPA allows contracts to be non-guaranteed.

Sounds like he is going to 're sign with Jacksonville for less money. They were going to cut him.

If someone could flip the strength of the NFLPA and MLBPA that would be great.

Grant Hill played less than half of one of his contracts and got the full amount over 100 million. The average NFL players career is 3.5 years. Unless you are a first round draft pick your first contract is set in stone at 4 year contracts and you never make life changing money. The NFL has this thing figured out so most never get their full rookie contract or make it to the real money. Add to that most of these guys never actually got their college degree or the skills not to spend all of their money from the jump.

It is a sick system compared to NBA and MLB both of which you are less likely to have an injury that could make future earnings more difficult. The NFL makes the most revenue and figures out how to keep it. 78% of all NFL players go bankrupt within 5 years of retirement. They need to do something about this what? I have no idea. Pay me a few million and I will figure it out. 60% of NBA players do the same and the best I can find for MLB is it is 4 times higher than national average.

Indeed.

It's a sad commentary on the financial education / skills of our population, really.

$5M after tax (or maybe $10M if you're being generous) generates enough in an annuity or income fund to live comfortably the rest of your life. It ain't complicated, folks.

For example...

Vanguard Target Retirement Income Fund (VTINX) has a lifetime average return* of 4.55% (after taxes on distributions). $10M at 4.55% equates to nearly a half million per year in your pocket - and $5M is still just south of $250K!

Ok, rant over.

*Past performance is not an indicator of future returns, blah blah blah, I know.
